Ireland Beats Scotland In Celtic Amateur Tournament

Ireland beat Scotland side 8-4 at a sold-out Youth and Cadet international meeting at the Everglades Hotel in Derry on Sunday night.

Leigh Moran, Chris Nevin, David Roche and Thomas Carthy claimed victories in a very competitive Youth clash which finished level at 4-4.

Ireland’s Cadets beat their Scottish counterparts 4-0 courtesy of wins for Tom Stokes, Francie Stokes, Brett McGinty and Tiernan Bradley.

There was little between the sides at Youth level, with six of the bouts being decided by one, two and three point margins.

Three of these narrow victories went to Ireland, while Scotland’s Sam Ball and Grant Quigley edged out Hugh Nevin and Michael Stokes.

Sunday’s IABA hosted international was held in conjunction with the Oak Leaf Boxing club in Derry.

The Irish Youth side are preparing for the 2012 AIBA World Youth Championships in Armenia in November and December.

Ireland have claimed six medals – two gold, two silver and two bronze – at the last two AIBA World Youth Championships in Azerbaijan and Mexico.
