United Boxers Celebrates Successful Winchester Fight Night

ByBoxing Press 24/10/2012

This past Saturday night, October 20 in front of a huge crowd at the Winchester Sportsplexin Winchester, VA, United Boxers presented an action packed evening of professional boxing featuring numerous fan favorites from the Delaware/Maryland/Virginia area and terrific prospects from across the country.

In the main event of the evening, undefeated welterweight prospectJames “Keep Em Sleepin” Stevenson of Baltimore, MD stay undefeated with a six round unanimous decision win over Angel Rios of Bronx, NY.

Utilizing superb defensive skills, Rios was able to avoid most of the hardest punches from Stevenson. However, the Baltimore native fan hurt Rios with some brutal hooks to the body.

Rios who has made a career of fighting top prospects from across the country moved to 9-15-0 (6KO’s) with the loss while Stevenson continued to take another step in his learning curve and advanced his record to 17-0-0 (11KO’s).

In a scheduled four round welterweight bout, Andy Ruiz of Oxnard, California, stopped local pro debuter Tobias Molina. Although overmatched, Molina was game, countering the more skilled and harder punching Ruiz. Scoring a TKO in the second round, the 19-year-old Ruiz improved to 3-0-0 (2KO’s) and looks like he could develop into a terrific professional.
In a scheduled four round super middleweight bout, Ronald “Akeem” Ellis of Lynn, Massachusetts, scored a first round knockout of Akron, Ohio’s Tierre King, 0-7-1 (4KO’s), to improve to 5-0-0 (4KO’s). Fighting in front of a large contingent of fans from his hometown that made the trip, Ellis continued to impress as a top prospect in the division.

Making his way across the country from Los Angeles, CA, junior lightweight prospect Saul Rodriguez won a four round decision over Cincinnati’s Quincy Johnson.

Perhaps the best fighter winless fighter in the country, Johnson’s good movement, defense and very solid offense allowed him to hang tough with the hard punching Rodriguez. Although Rodriguez may have been frustrated by Johnson’s movement and defense, he pressed forward with the action to take the unanimous decision improving to 6-0-1 (5KO’s), while Johnson fell to 0-7-1.

Cruiserweight prospect and corporate attorney Venroy July displayed his full array of power shots, dominating veteran Cullen Rodgers of Akron, Ohio for the first three rounds until the bout was stopped midway through the fourth.

With the win, July of Suitland, MD, improved to 12-0-2 with five knockouts while Cullen fell to 10-37-2 (6KO’s). Although starting late in professional boxing, July continues to get ascend as a prospect with his skills improving with each start.
Hometowner Daniel Shull wasted no time in his clash with undefeated prospect Trevor McCumby, bashing him with a crunching left jab to the jaw immediately after the opening bell. However, the Chicagoan fought calmly with hard precision punches to Shull’s head and body.

Although dropped four times, the game Shull showed why he is one of the toughest fighters in the sport, as he gamely fought on. To a loud chorus of boos from the huge crowd, the referee stopped the bout midway through the fourth. With the win, McCumby’s record hits 8-0-0 (8KO’s), while Shull’s falls to 3-18-1 (1KO).

Shull showed what a tough guy he was and McCumby showed why he is one of the best young prospects in the country.
Stuart’s Draft, Virginia standout Richie Andrews is never in a bad fight and his fight with Curtis Morton was no exception. The first round was all action between them and the fight looked like it was going to be an all out war, when Morton’s arm was caught in a clinch and twisted so he was unable to continue early in the second round. There was much complaining from the Morton camp that went nowhere with the Virginia commission and culminated in Morton’s trainer being thrown out of the building.

With the win Andrews improved to 5-2-3 (1KO), while Harlem, NY’s Morton fell to 1-3-2.
