Giant Heavyweights Klitschko, Helenius Hope To Impress

ByCorey Quincy 10/11/2012

On Saturday, Epix will televise two intriguing Heavyweight collisions from two different venues.

6’6 Wladmir “Dr. Steelhammer” Klitschko (58-3-0 50 KO’s) will face off against undefeated 6’7 Polish powerhouse Mariusz Wach (27-0-0 15 KO’s)in a WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO title fight from the 02 Arena in Hamburg, Germany, plus live from his honored home of Helenski, another monstrous heavyweight, Robert Helenius (17-0-0 11 KO’s) faces stocky fringe contender Sherman Williams (35-11-2 19 KO’s).

“Who is Wach?” is the massive variable that can determine whether or not Wladimir has just another defense on his hands, or a genuine career threat, a question that not even hardcore fight fanatics can answer.

But, I will tell you from watching Wach on Youtube that this man has power. His fight with Irish journeyman Kevin McBride last year went viral, at least in boxing terms.

That hype grinding fight against McBride all came to a head with a straight left hand and an obliterating overhand right that left the Irish warrior on the mat like a squashed fly for several minutes. I won’t deny the fact that I replayed the clip nearly 20 times in a row. It was truly impressive despite the fact this was still merely Kevin McBride.

In contrast, Wladimir Klitschko has shut down top contenders and world champions such as Ruslan Chageav, Chris Byrd, Eddie Chambers, Tony Thompson and many more guys twenty-steps above the level of opposition that Wach has faced.

Top observers have concluded that unless Wach can land that solid flush right hand, Wladimir will beat him with better fundamentals, despite the fact that the Polish fighter holds a minor weight and height advantage over Klitschko, which is a highly rare occurrence in most of Wladimir’s, or his brother Vitali’s, fights.

The non-televised undercard features well-skilled Cruiserweight prospect Rakhim Chakhkiev (15-0-0) facing Andres Taylor (21-2-2) of the USA in a showcase, and Polish welterweight contender Rafal Jackiewicz (42-10-1) looking to keep a solid win streak going against undefeated British threat Rick Godding (18-0-0).

The other fight on Epix this evening will be Helenius vs. Williams, which doesn’t seem very competitive as Helenius has clear physical, mental, and tactical advantages in nearly every notable area against his Caribbean-based opponent.

“The Tank”, Sherman Williams is a gritty opponent and has the chin to stand toe-to-toe with powerful fighters, and will try to win but many expect that Helenius will be often capitalizing on his opponent’s weak defense and eventually score a late finish.

Tune in to Epix from 4:30 PM EST in the USA for both contests. Live video stream can be found with free trial at EPIXHD.com (US Only).

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport.
