Murray, Quigg Save The Day For Hatton Boxing

Things didn’t go as planned for Ricky Hatton on his ring return nine days ago, but the Hatton Promotions CEO was boosted by world class performances from Martin Murray and Scott Quigg.

Bury’s unbeaten Quigg captured the vacant WBA interim super-bantamweight crown and looked sensational stopping Rendall Munroe in six rounds.

St Helens’ star Murray also came through in six against Venezuelan Jorge Navarro to claim the vacant WBA interim middleweight championship.

Murray will now face brilliant WBC 160lb king Sergio Martinez in Argentina on April 27 after proving he belongs in the big time.

Hatton said: “These are very exciting times for Martin. It has been work in progress for Martin. I am very proud of the job Hatton Promotions have done with him.

“I think that it is a credit to Hatton Promotions for making make such fights for him. We have come a long way in a short space of time.”

Quigg’s first title defence will take place early next year with his eventual targets the 122 lb division’s superstars Nonito Donaire, Abner Mares and Guillermo Rigondeaux, the WBA regular champion.

Hatton added: “Of course, my result was a bitter disappointment but when I watched a DVD of Scott’s performance I was soon smiling.

“Rendall has been one of the flag bearers of British boxing and an exceptional professional who I have enjoyed promoting and being around.

“But Scott was on another level at the weekend and there are so many big money fights ahead. Hatton Promotions is going strong and in Martin and Scott we have two fighters who will soon be packing out arenas.”
