Boxing Slams Into Long Island!

ByBen Mestman 16/09/200522/01/2006

The Town House in Huntington, NY was the scene of some great Thursday night boxing action put on by Frankie D Productions and headlined by the New York State Lightweight Championship. Saddoboxing was there and you won’t want to miss this exclusive ringside report of all seven bouts on the card.

The opening bout featured junior weighterweights Juan Carlos Herrera and Dwayne Hall. In a close battle, Herrera in the red corner comes out to win a 10-9 first round before Hall later establishes his jab, largely ineffective but efficient enough to even up in round two. In round three the action heated up into a good fight that led to majority draw. Official scorecards: 39-37, 38-38 (twice) Majority Draw.

Next up welters Mike Ruiz and Jason Thompson squared off in the pro debut of each fighter. There was a headbutt early in round one, with Ruiz cut before suffereing a knockdown and getting a standing eight count at end of the frame. Thompson attacks early during the next frame before the fight stopped was stopped at 2:53 of round two.Thompson wins the fight on a second round TKO.

The third bout of the evening was between heavyweights Elijah Dickins and Carlos “Tiger” Sanchez. Both fighters are novices early in their careers, with Dickins having a record of 0-1 and Sanchez 1-0 before the fight. Showing the sharper skills during the bout, Sanchez takes advantage of a block and hit exchange to force a second round stoppage. Sanchez wins the fight on a second round TKO.

Next up was light welters Adam Czacher of Coran, NY meeting Diego Villalba of Ozone Park, NY Not much went on in this four rounder except Czacher was cut early, the ring card girl probably catches the most attention in this one! Villalba wins by unanimous decision. Official scorecards: 39-38, 39-37 and 39-37.

In an entertaining scrap, super middles Joe “Mean” Greene and Craig Robinson put on one of the best fights of the evening in the next bouts. Greene, of Green Team Boxing, got into a slugfest with Robinson that gave the boxing fans in attendance what they wanted in a rough battle from the opening bell! Robinson went down in the first round and it was constant action before the fight stopped in third round with Greene’s fans chanting “Southside! Southside! Ai Yi Yi!”. Greene wins the bout on a third round TKO.

Next was the slowest contest of the evening. Middleweights Pawel Wolak and Julio Jean engaged in a slow, boring fight but Wolok came out on top to remain undefeated. Wolok stops Jean on a fifth round TKO.

The headliner of the card was up next with Freddy Soto of the Bronx meeting Jaime Palma of Alexandria, VA. The short but sweet main event turned into a technical and systematic match before Soto of the red corner scored a knockdown in the first round. Later, a good counter right hand leaves Palma staggering before a nice left jab, straight right combination from Soto ends the fight. Soto wins by third round TKO.

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Why was Usyk so bad? 27/05/2026
What was the major factor for Usyk to perform so poorly against Rico? Rico better than expected, skilled kick boxer, huge size, awkward style, surprise element? Age of Usyk finally showing up? Weight Usyk was too heavy? Usyk not taking the fight seriously? Ukraine war on his mind? 4 posts - 4 participants Read full topic […]

  • Jai Opetaia saying what many of us think 26/05/2026
Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
