Boxing Ringside Report From Manchester: Jamie Moore – David Walker British Title Fight

ByAnthony Roberts 24/09/200512/05/2013

Local Hero Jamie Moore retained his British title with a four round blast out of game challenger David Walker from London.

Both fighters came out jabbing in the opener looking to find their range but it was Moore who began to have some success towards the end of the round, getting through with some clean shots while Walker, a former European title challenger, was content with hitting arms and gloves with his fast two fisted combinations.

There was more of the same in round two with both men jabbing and looking for openings, when a clash of heads left Moore cut over the left eye. The most eye catching shots were from Moore who caught Walker with three fast jabs in succession to end the round.

Both men fired off sharp shots in the third. Walker with both hands and Moore looking for solid single shots as well as going to the body with some success. The breakthrough came for Moore at the end of the round when he put Walker down with a vicious right hook to the body, which took all the wind out of the Londoner, who was relieved to hear the bell.

Moore was straight on the attack at the start of the fourth round, catching a covering Walker with damaging shots from both hands. Moore hit Walker with a series of damaging hooks, the last of which drove him to the canvas. He stayed down while the referee counted only for his corner to throw the towel in at the count of five. Walker lost for the third time with 26 wins and a draw while Moore moved to 22-3. Moore can now look ahead to European honours while Walker has some tough decisions to make about his future. The weights were Moore 11 St (154lbs), Walker 10st 13lbs and 5oz (153 1/4lbs)

In other action, former British Featherweight Champion Jamie McKeever knocked out former British bantam challenger Jim Betts in the fourth of a six round featherweight bout. McKeever was himself down in round two only to get up and go toe to toe with Betts. It swung one way, then the other, only for Betts to wilt in the fourth.

Former Commonwealth welterweight challenger Ali Nuumbembe kept his title aspirations alive with a third round demolition of Gavin Down. It was all Nuumbembe from the off as he caught Down with some solid one twos. Down looked ready to go in the second as Nuumbembe had him pinned on the ropes. There was more of the same in round three where the referee called time on brave Down’s effort.

Other Results:
Mihai Kotai retained his IBO Light Middleweight title with a close and questionable decision over Sebastian Luan.

Local middleweight Wayne Pinder scored a routine six round points win over Sheffield journeyman Jason Collins to stay on course for his pending EU title shot.

Local super featherweight prospect John Murray kept his unbeaten record intact with an impressive third round stoppage of Russian Azad Azizov. Murray now moves to 14 wins no losses.

Before the main event, MC John McDonald asked the crown to stand in silence for 10 tolls of the bell for tragic former lightweight champion Leavander Johnson, who sadly passed away yesterday after loosing his title to Jesus Chavez on Saturday in Las Vegas.
