Scottish Boxing Triumph! Anderson Wins Commonwealth from Okine

In Kirkcaldy, Scotland undefeated Kevin Anderson went into the trenches with one of Ghana’s finest and came away with a razor thin split decison victory and the Commonwealth Welterweight title. On a Matchroom promotion, the Tommy Gilmour managed fighter from Buckhaven went to war with beltholder Joshua Okine and it was toe to toe action with very close rounds all the way throught. When the smoke cleared Anderson became the fourth Scottish fighter in history to win the Commonwealth Welterweight crown. Credit goes to both men in a very fast paced fight that was televised live in the UK by Sky Sports.

On the undercard in a scheduled eight round affair, former Commonwealth Super Feather titlist Craig Docherty kept his cool in the face of an all gun blazing strategy from John Mackay. The Glasgow man patiently bided his time behind great defense but unleashed a nice combination in the seventh round that forced the referee to stop the bout with Mackay still on his feet.

Very hot welterweight prospect George Hillyard’s second pro fight was over as as quick as his first. The highly skilled novice came out in the first very fast with quick, accurate shots and put down opponent James Gorman within 20 seconds of the opening bell. The action went on for another minute after that with the towel coming in and the ref stopping the fight Hillyard was very impressive and one to watch for the future.

Light heavy Stevie McGuire took apart Polish import Marcin Radola, droping him at the start of the first before Radola went down again from a body shot. The towel came in from Radola’s corner but the ref kicked the towel out, allowing the fight to go on, only to jump right in and stop it after two hard shots went in from McGuire to take him to his fifth pro win.
