Boxing Preview: Derry Matthews – Steve Chinnock

ByRobin York 26/01/2006

Unbeaten featherweight Derry Matthews goes for his first title Saturday night on the big Sports Network show in Nottingham when he meets former English Super Featherweight challenger Steve Chinnock over ten rounds. Matthews, from Liverpool, is unbeaten in all fourteen of his professional fights and will be looking to make it fifteen against Chinnock, who despite having one less fight and three defeats has the edge in the experience as has shared a ring with Mickey Bowden, Andrew Ferrans and former British Champions Roy Rutherford and Dazzo Williams.

Chinnock beat Bowden on points over eight rounds but was stopped in the losses to Ferrans, Williams and Rutherford, although against the latter, Chinnock was doing surprisingly well until a horrible gash caused the fight to end prematurely. Matthews, young at twenty two, has been brought along sensibly, defeating journeymen Peter Buckley and Steve Gethin before stepping up in level against mercurial operators Frederic Bonifai and Buster Dennis, outpointing both over six rounds. The win over Dennis looks even better now that the stocky volume puncher went on to hold undefeated prospects Stephen Foster Jr and Lee Cook to draws.

Matthews will start a big favourite and will most likely capture the vacant title with a clear points win or a late stoppage.

  • Do we understand that these people are FIGHTING? 03/10/2026
We watch boxing as if it is just a sport. But do we realize that these people are fighting. Like, literally trying to beat each other to death in the ring? Do we appreciate how different that is? I was sitting back today and watching some old fights and the reality hit me. These people are actually fighting. How amazing and shocking that is at the same time? […]

  • Kugan Should Retire! 16/09/2026
He’s Eddies mate and I know they’ve been doing interviews since before either of them really had a profile…but Eddie still gives Kugan wayyyyy too much latitude in the interviews that Hearn needs to resonate with the public. Kugan constantly cuts across him, with some meaningless aside, or to tries to get a rubbish ‘gotcha’, for no reason. There are better i […]

  • Ain't we all want to see Jai v David? 14/09/2026
Don’t we? Let’s cut all of the bullshit here. This is the only fight worth a $100 PPV buy, it’s Jai Opetai v David Benavidez. Canelo is in the background now. He is not worthy of paying any attention to at this point and time. Plus, since Crawford is retired, he is not worth mentioning either, even if he comes back to fight Boots… There is no other fight on […]

Conor has already managed to secure a multimillion contract from Zuffa which may be in jeopardy. As a res […]
