Marco Antonio Rubio Wins Big On Chicago Boxing Card

Big hitting light middleweight Marco Antonio Rubio completed his comeback from a disastrous loss a year and a half ago by outlasting hardened Philadelphia based Russian Aslanbek Kodzoev on an 8 Count/Golden Boy Promotion at Cicero Stadium in suburban Chicago on Friday night. The first two rounds were tentative for both men but the action stepped up in the third and Rubio began affecting Kodzoev with well timed uppercuts and hard left hooks to the body. By the fifth the Russian turned the tables, catching Rubio with sharp, bracing counters. The sixth featured superb two way action with the Mexican finding a home for the big right hand but Kodzoev couldn’t miss with the left hook. The seventh found Rubio wearing down the Philadelphian and when Kodzoev slipped to the canvas at one point he fell on a knee of the opponent and suffered a chest injury that kept him from answering the bell for the eighth. With the win Rubio moves up to 33-2-1 (30) while Kodzoev falls to 16-2-1 (11). Also on the bill, super bantamweights Antonio Escalante and Jose Andres Hernandez engaged in a thrilling two way slugfest that saw each man visit the canvas. When the smoke finally cleared it was Escalante who took a close unanimous decision victory.
