Ringside Boxing Report: Z Gorres – Jose Tirado
| Guilty Boxing started off 2006 with an action-packed event over the weekend at The Orleans Hotel & Casino in boxing’s top fight town, Las Vegas, Nevada. After the recent Manny Pacquiao show here in town, if you hadn’t gotten your fix of Freddy Roach trained Filipino southpaws, this was the fight card for you. unanimous decision over a tough but overmatched Jose Tirado. Gorres fellow countryman, lightweight prospect Czar Amonsot, also scored a unanimous decision, this one over 8 rounds, against Christian Favela, another very tough but overmatched Mexican fighter.
The two main fights were actually quite similar in style and structure. The Filipino fighters were faster, more well-rounded boxers with good movement, very well suited against their plodding, always forward moving opponents. Roach has received deserved credit for improving the two fisted combination punching of his protege, Pacquiao, and it was evident to this ringside writer, that Gorres and Amonsot were following suit, employing nice right hooks and uppercuts, to go along with their southpaw straight lefts.
Tirado’s record was listed as 24-8 with 19 knockouts going into his bout with Gorres, although boxrec.com lists a much poorer record. Tirado deserved credit for never giving up to the final bell and landing his share of punches, but there were those at ringside who showed concern and were a little turned off by the amount of punches he was receiving. Favela was more competitive in his unanimous decision loss to Amonsot and got a nice rise out of the crowd with a big right hand in the 7th, but Amonsot took the punch well and continued with his movement and combinations. A large gash to Favela’s scalp from early headbutts made for a bloody battle throughout, with Amonsot’s bleached blonde hair masked in Favela’s blood by fight’s end. Amonsot took the eight round bout by scores of 77-74 (twice) and 78-73 to improve his record to 14-1-1 (10ko’s), while Favela fell to 11-10-4 (8 ko’s). Gorres more decisive victory was by scores of 98-91(twice) and 99-90 to improve his record to 22-1-1 (12ko’s). It will be interesting to see how far Roach can take these two talented, Filipino southpaw prospects.
