Heavyweight Samuel Peter Highlights Big Night Of Boxing

ByBoxing Press 04/04/2006

Boxing action takes place in the Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday, April 28th

Mohegan Sun, in association with Duva Boxing, is pleased to announce that granite fisted Heavyweight slugger Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter will return to action on Friday, April 28th, headlining a 1-2-3 punch of Heavyweight boxing action in the Mohegan Sun Arena. ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights will televise the action.

Peter, 25-1 (21 KOs), will tangle with Detroit’s seven-foot-tall Julius Long (14-7, 12 KO’s) in a 12-round main event battle for his NABF Heavyweight Championship. This will be Peter’s second bout since suffering a debatable heavyweight title elimination loss to former WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko last September and his first fight with new trainer Jesse Reid, who is expected to bring the 25 year old wrecking machine to the next level as a pugilist.

Tickets are on sale now for $75.00, $40.00 and $25.00, and available through the Mohegan Sun Box Office and Ticketmaster. Customers may log onto ticketmaster.com; call any Ticketmaster phone number; or visit any Ticketmaster outlet.

In addition to the championship bout, the evening is also scheduled to feature surging heavyweight contender Brian “The Beast” Minto, 23-1 (14 KOs), who will face Billy Zumbrun (19-6-1, 11 KO’s) of Ogden, Utah, in an eight-round scrap, and “The New Italian Stallion” Mike Marrone, 13-0 (10 KOs), the Vero Beach brawler coming off an ESPN2-televised thriller in his last fight, will take on Ohio’s Dan Whetzel (7-5-1, 4 KO’s).

Rated in the top four or five of nearly every world sanctioning body, Peter will be looking to continue carving a path of destruction to the heavyweight title when he squares off against Long. He intends to challenge any champion who comes out on top after the heavyweight title fights this spring. Peter is universally recognized as the future of the heavyweight division and its most exciting slugger.

Since scoring an eye-opening PPV-televised stoppage over rival Vinny Maddalone last September, the vastly improved Minto has appeared twice, logging stoppages over Forrest Neal and Troy Weida. “The Beast” sits poised on the doorstep of another high-profile fight and will be looking to make a statement against Zumbrun.

Undefeated 20-year-old boxer/puncher Mike Marrone introduced himself to the boxing world just two weeks ago, as he fought a heart-stopping knockdown, drag-out war against more experienced Zack Page in his television debut. Marrone had Page down twice and seemingly out when a lucky punch dropped him and forced him to hang on for dear life to survive. Marrone showed tons of heart in that appearance and won over a lot of fans with his exciting and heavy-handed style.

The exciting undercard is scheduled to include world class prospects Joe McCreedy (4-0, 4 KO’s) from Lowell, Massachusetts, Patricio Lopez (5-0, 5 KO’s), formerly of Venezuela and now out of Londonderry, New Hampshire, Lajuan Simon (13-0, 8 KO’s) from Philadelphia, and Raymond Biggs, Jr. (3-0, 3 KO’s), a two-time New York Golden Gloves champion from Brooklyn.

Ben Whittaker will be heading across the pond if he beats Braian Suarez on Saturday night. The Callum Smith v David Morrell was cancelled. “Ben Whittaker fights Suarez, who’s a big power puncher," said Hearn during a recent appearance on the Ariel Helwani Show. "This is a big moment for Ben, a big run, because if he’s successful on Saturday, he’ll […]

  • Callum Smith injured 07/04/2026
Callum Smith has pulled out of the David Morrell fight which was due to take place in his hometown Liverpool on 18rh April. I was looking forward to this fight. Callum has a rib injury during training camp. This is a big blow for him as he has not fought since he had that epic victory over Joshua Buatsi. Ben Whittaker will be headlining the event now. talksp […]
  • Errol Spence v Tim Tszyu - June 2026 07/04/2026
The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]

  • Devin Haney vs Rolly Romero collapses 03/04/2026
Negotiations for a WBO and WBA welterweight unification clash between Devin Haney and Rolly Romero have reportedly collapsed. Organisers had planned for the fight to headline a PBC event on May 30, live on Amazon Prime PPV. Haney has turned down the fight. The reason for Haney pulling the plug is that he wasn’t offered a guaranteed purse. PBC instead propose […]

Rene’s not talked about much. Even here in Puerto Rico he’s not as well known as Xander Zayas or even Oscar Collazo. But he’s got 2 of the 4 belts in the division, and tonight he defends them against Masataka Taniguchi in Japan. Gotta hand it to him. This is his 3rd straight fight in Japan. I admire any fighter who’s willing to go halfway around the world to […]
