Ringside Boxing Report: Edgar Santana – Tomas Barrientes

ByRichmann 22/05/2006

Santana And Starks Both Victorious In Latest Broadway Boxing Show

Promoter Lou DiBella was back in The Grand Ballroom at the Manhattan Center in New York on Friday night to display another group of his promising fighters. Edgar Santana improved his record to 18-2 (12) with a hard fought decision win over the game Tomas Barrientes, 27-10-1 (17), in ten round junior welterweight bout. It was clear from the first round that Santana was the quicker and more elusive of the two fighters. He used this advantage by establishing his jab to set up punches and score at will from round one through three.

Barrientes was determined not to be another win on Santana’s record and he would do his best, with some success, to get on the inside in an effort to brawl with Santana. In rounds four through six, the two fighters engaged in toe to toe action with Santana getting the better of the exchanges. By round seven, perhaps sensing he was ahead, Santana wisely boxed more and used his speed to outwork the slower Barrientes for the remainder of the bout. The official scores were 98-92 twice and 96-94.

Gary Stark improved his professional record to 16-0 (8) by facing Luis Bolano, 41-6 (31), in an eight round featherweight bout. From the opening bell of round one, Bolano appeared to have no respect for Stark by swarming him with a barrage of punches. Perhaps this was because Bolano knew he had more knockouts than Stark has fights but Stark would not be intimidated by the aggressive and more experienced fighter. Stark was determined to show his cheering hometown crowd that he was worthy of their support.

Stark stood his ground and brawled with Bolano most of the fight. Bolano complained to the referee about a low blow from Stark in the fifth round and after receiving time to recover, the brawling between the two fighters resumed. This bout was a classic case of a younger, less experienced fighter using courage, youth and determination to defeat the more experienced fighter. Official scores were 77-74 twice and 78-73.

In a match that was surprisingly the most exciting bout of the evening, Kimberly Colbert, 4-10 (2), upset the favored Maureen Shea, 5-1 (3). Shea outboxed Colbert beautifully for the first round but she unwisely allowed Colbert to taunt her into a brawl near the end of round two. As a result, Shea suffered a knockdown.

Perhaps stunned by the flooring, Shea was on the defensive for the remainder of the fight. It was Colbert who looked to press the action, getting the better of the exchanges, when the two brawled. Colbert won an unpopular split decision. Two judges scored the bout 59-55, 58-56 for Colbert, while the other judge scored the bout 57-56 for Shea. SaddoBoxing scored the bout a draw.

Emmanuel Clottey, 24-6 (14), decisioned Francisco Campos, 20-7-1 (12), in an uneventful eight round welterweight bout. Clottey used his jab and experience to outwork his opponent. Official scores were 79-73 twice ad 77-75.

Juan Cabrera improved to 5-0 (4) with a decision win over the game Tomas Padron, 2-5-2 (2). All three judges scored the bout 40-36.

Willie Nelson, 1-0 (1), made a successful pro debut with third round TKO over Diego Villaba,
1-6-1 (0).

Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]
