Jose Luis Castillo prevailed over Juan Lazcano in the struggle for the vacant WBC lightweight championship earlier this year, the complete opposite of the fortune spectrum from his challenger on Saturday. Joel Casamayor suffered his second career defeat to Diego Corrales, no shame except that no loss is acceptable for the proud Cuban and he

seeks to redeem himself against Castillo. The champion has come a long way since plying his trade as a sparring partner for the great Julio Cesar Chavez, these days it is Castillo himself who is treading his own path towards the hallowed halls of Mexican fighting excellence. The fight will see Castillo’s toughness and incessant pressure fighting matched against Casamayor’s smooth southpaw boxing skills. Whichever style is your preference, all fight fans must be unanimous on the fact that is an important fight and one that is bound to bring out the best in both fighters. The saddoboxing.com team has officially weighed in with their opinions on this big fight, read on to see who they think will emerge from it with the title.

Joe de Beauchamp: Jose Luis Castillo KO’s by the tenth and wins. Casamayor is starting to think in the ring. Thinking makes things hard in the ring. Castillo trains at high elevations and away from fans. Jose Castillo will present his strong heart this weekend.

Greig Johnston: Casamayor’s move to 135-pounds is brave, and taking on Castillo, the best 135-pounder in the world in his first fight there is even braver. Even though he has weighed in at 133, 134 for non-title fights, you have to figure that Castillo is marginally bigger come fight time. Casamayor’s habit of starting slow and the relentless pressure fighting of Castillo will conspire to see him on the wrong end of a lopsided
decision.

Jim Amato: Some interesting bouts coming our way on Saturday. Jose Luis Castillo puts his lightweight crown on the line against a very tough customer in Joel Casamayor. Castillo is a fine little fighting machine who I feel has yet to receive the respect due to him. He picked no slouch in Casamayor who is a quick, sharp hitter. Jose better bring his “A” game with him to ensure a victory. I think he will. I’m going with Castillo by a close but well deserved verdict.

Lee Bellfield: Castillo is one of those fighters who makes it difficult for anyone. However, I think Casamayor’s southpaw stance is the difference maker here. I think Casamayor will try to box a similar fight to the one Mayweather did against Castillo and will nick a points decision.

Jim Cawkwell: Castillo has proven that he is as equipped as anyone in the world to go into the trenches and come out with a win. Casamayor has the skills but he stands and fights far too much and he will get caught in a brawl with Castillo and the Mexican champion will win a close decision after a memorable fight.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
