Boxing Info: Busy Lawton Prepares For Doncaster Away Day

ByBoxing Press 01/06/2006

There can be few busier men in British boxing than Werrington’s Scott Lawton. Not only is Scott ranked as one of the UK’s leading lightweights but he is also the man behind North Staffs promoters Impact Boxing.

Lawton’s Team Impact now boasts a roster of seven professionals and five coaches with more professional boxers scheduled to sign contracts shortly. In addition to being an integral part of the promotion team at Impact Scott also holds full trainers licence and therefore takes an active part in the gym.

During the last month Lawton has promoted a near sell-out show at Stoke’s Kings Hall where he defended his Midlands Area Lightweight Title against, former Amir Khan opponent, Baz Carey in what many in boxing circles recognise as being one of the most impressive performances of his career to date.

On 18 May Scott turned up in Walsall as trainer and corner-man to Impact’s Ian Clyde who faced Stafford light-welterweight Rob Hunt.

The following evening Scott travelled to London to take up his ringside seat for the contest between Lee Meager and Dave Stewart (a former Lawton opponent) for the vacant British Lightweight Title; a title that Scott is committed to bring back to North Staffs.

Most recently Scott has helped in the preparation of and sparred regularly with Impact’s light-welterweight prospect Gary Reid in preparation for Reid’s televised contest against Leo O’Reilly which took place last Friday (26th May) at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Stoke light-welterweight Gary Reid turned in a stylish performance at Bethnal Green’s York Hall last night to demolish Bexleyheath hot-shot Leo ‘The Lion’ O’Reilly, referee Ken Curtis stepping in to halt Leo’s suffering with just twelve seconds of the 2nd round remaining.

Having halted Paisley’s capable Kevin McIntyre just three weeks ago on Impact’s Kings Hall event Gary has run into a rich vein of form indeed and must now be considered as a serious contender for domestic honours.

Co-incidentally, O’Reilly had been nominated to face of against Norwich southpaw Jon Thaxton for the vacant English Lightweight Title before the end of September. Reid’s victory now puts O’Reilly’s challenge in some doubt particularly since he weighed in at three pounds over the lightweight limit.

Thaxton too may also now be out of the English Title race; it is reported that he is currently suffering from a perforated eardrum but in any case he must now be considered as favourite to challenge Lee Meager for the British Title.

Scott Lawton’s attention now turns to his trip to Doncaster on 9th June where he will face another southpaw, Stefy Bull, in a final eliminator for the English Title; the winner of this contest will then automatically challenge for the English belt.

Both Impact and Bull’s manager, John Rushton, had originally hoped that the contest would be for the championship but Thaxton had already been promised the opportunity to contest the title; in light of recent developments the contest may yet become a title bout.

John Rushton said: “ We are disappointed that Stefy and Scott won’t be challenging for the English Title, Stefy holds the Central Area Title and Scott holds the equivalent Midlands Area Title. In any case it will be a hotly contested fight between two talented and worthy challengers the winner of which will justly deserve a shot at major domestic honours.”

Meanwhile the unassuming Scott Lawton is quietly continuing with his preparation.
