Boxing Update: Edwards Added To Doncaster Undercard

The latest member of Team Impact to prepare for action in the ring is the diminutive Chris Edwards. At 5’ 3” and billed as flyweight Edwards often goes un-noticed however, despite his lack of height and weight, he packs a hefty punch and can pose a danger to any of the smaller men in professional boxing.

At first glance Chris’ record doesn’t look too impressive, with 8 wins and 2 draws from 21 contests. What the stats don’t tell you is that because there are only a handful of flyweights in the UK most of Edwards’ contests have been against significantly heavier opponents; in September 2004 he stepped all the way up to super-bantamweight to defeat Neil Read to secure the British Masters Title in that weight division.

Unfortunately, since it was unrealistic for him to fight at super-bantamweight on a regular basis, Chris reluctantly relinquished the title. Future title challenges are on the cards for Chris and Impact Boxing are keen to secure him a tilt at the coveted Midlands Area Title in the near future.

Chris is now looking forward to taking on Doncaster’s bantamweight Jamie McDonnell on the undercard of the Scott Lawton Stefy Bull English Lightweight Title Eliminator at Doncaster Dome on 9th June.

The heavier and younger McDonnell has had four professional bouts all ending in points victories. Three of McDonnell’s opponents to date have also been in the ring with Chris Edwards with Edwards having and equivalent or better record against each of them. Although the bout will be closely contested Edwards should have enough ammunition to inflict a first defeat on the Yorkshire-man.

About the contest Chris Edwards said: “I don’t know an awful lot about McDonnell but I’ve heard that he’s a useful lad. I am used to stepping up a weight and I think that my experience and my power will serve me well. Impact have me well prepared and things have been progressing well in the gym, I’m very pleased with my condition.”

Edwards also went on to say: “It will be great to appear on the same bill as Scott Lawton in such an important bout for him but I am going there to win, not just to make up the numbers. I boxed at the Dome in Doncaster back in 2000 and beat Andy Roberts on points there so the trip doesn’t worry me.”
