Dennis Hobson is to offer Joe Calzaghe £1,500,000 to move up to light heavyweight and face world champion Clinton Woods in an all British showdown.
Providing both men come through their next bouts with wins, Hobson would like to stage the fight in Britain this winter.
The Fight Academy promoter said: “I’m ready to sit down with my counterpart, Frank Warren, and put this fight together. Clinton Woods v Joe Calzaghe is the biggest main event in British boxing and it would be a dereliction of duty for us to allow it to go begging because of promotional rivalries.”
Hobson added that Woods, too, would receive a huge payday for the fight.
“With us promoting the fight I’ll be able to pay Clinton what I know he is worth as a world champion and as the best light heavyweight on the planet,” Hobson said.
Calzaghe is expected to be back in action in October, while a September date is mooted for Woods’s eagerly awaited rubber match with top-rated American Glen Johnson.
