Ringside Boxing Report: Undercard Of David Haye – Ismail Abdoul

In the fight of the night on the Maloney Promotions bill at the Altrincham leisure centre last Friday night, British light middleweight champion Jamie Moore tuned up in very impressive fashion for his September bout with Matthew Macklin. Going up against fellow south paw Mike Algoet, from Belgium, Moore was expected to be taken the distance. Algoet is a fighter of proven durability – once taking the excellent Roman Karmazan the distance – yet Jamie managed to get his win inside schedule. The action was good, too.

Jamie’s loyal fan base had lots to shout about. Not least the quality of Moore’s work. Mike has a reputation as being something of a spoiler, but against Moore he wasnt given the chance. Switching his shots from body to head well, Moore set a fast pace and, despite going up against a full middleweight, was stronger at the inside work. In short, Jamie put not one foot wrong – he boxed like a fine and experienced pro.

In the first round, Algoet was given a warning for carelessness with his head – another reputation of his – as both guys came forward. Moore threw hard jabs from his southpaw stance, before the inside action started. There was good body work from Jamie also – his shots to the ribcage were really digging in. He had his back to the ropes at the rounds end, yet it was Jamies opener. A lively start to the bout.

In round two, A big right landed from Moore, but the Belgian was happy to get aggressive himself. His approach was not negative tonight. Jamie was picking his spots well, landing more work on the inside. He appeared to hurt Mike with a shot, and the Belgian was also cut, above his right eye. Moore was looking for a stoppage already.

At the start of the third, I noted on my pad that the fight wasnt likely to go the distance. Moore was really gunning for his man! Always a crowd pleaser, Jamie wasnt disappointing his fans here – he was setting a very fast pace. Another particularly hard looking body shot landed for him – along with more stiff right jabs. Algoet was wrestled to the floor in the session, such was Moores strength. Jamie was definitely the boss at the inside work – of which there was more here.

A good fight was being fought, and by the fourth Jamie was starting to go to town on his imported opponent. He was after the KO! At times with his back to the ropes, Jamie boxed well in this position as well. Proving he is more than just a brawler, he showed some cute moves – spinning his man as he came off the ropes, for example. Mike had his moments in this round though – he was tough, no doubt. They locked inside again, and then Moore hurt Algoet with a left and a right to the head. The Belgian was looking somewhat hurt as the bell rang. He gave Moore an acknowledging tap of his glove on the way to his corner.

Going into the fifth, Algoet was still game. However, his cut had worsened now. Left uppercuts off the ropes scored for Jamie, and his superior strength was beginning to tell. A big left to the head also landed for him. Then, with Mike attempting to fight along the ropes, the referee, deciding he’d seen enough, rescued him and signalled the end. Although Algoet may have been able to continue, there was no point in letting the fight go on. Jamie had won every round and it had become very one sided in this, the fifth.

To the delight of his vocal and adoring fans, Jamie Moore did what hadnt looked likely beforehand in stopping the durable Algoet. The upcoming clash with Matthew Macklin should be some fight!

In the remaining fights on the bill:

Brett Flourney made short work of first pro opponent. He stopped Tommy Jones of Wales in just sixty one seconds for an eye catching KO at light middleweight.

Chris Pacy – Soldier Boy as his he is known, also won in quick fashion. The lightweight stopped the experienced Peter Allen in the second. After twice decking Allen in the first, he finished his short night in the second of the scheduled four rounder.

While David Hayes stable mate, Anthony The Scream Small, put on a fine exhibition of silky boxing skills as he outscored the Ukrainian, Viadimir Borovski over six threes at light middle. A stylish mover, Small enjoyed himself as he used every one of his punches to outclass the tough visitor.

Reminiscent, at least to me, of the great Pernell Whittaker at times, Anthony lead with both hands and showed off his ultra-sharp reflexes. The gifted prospect did as he pleased, and won every round. Although at times his showboating didnt go down too well with the audience, the future could very well see Small become a firm favourite among fight fans.

And finally, in a spirited four rounder at lightweight, Danny Harding out pointed Neil McQuade by a score of 39-38.

Overall, despite the disappointment of the main event , a good nights boxing was staged in Altrincham.

Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]
