Worldwide Weekend Boxing Roundup

ByCurtis McCormick 21/08/2006

Aside from the Paul Williams – Sharmba Mitchell card and Evander Holyfield comeback already covered on SaddoBoxing, there were many good contests held over the weekend across the globe.

Starting with Friday, we first hit America where in Houston, Texas Giovanni Segura, 15-0 (12), secured the vacant IBA Flyweight belt with a fourth round stoppage over ex-world title challenger Jair Jimenez, 22-7-1 (16), of Colombia to remain unbeaten. On the same bill, middleweight southpaw Jesus Gonzales, 18-1 (11), began his comeback after suffering a stoppage loss last time out by decisioning Mexico’s Fernando Vela, 4-6-1 (2), over six rounds.

In Saratoga Springs, New York heavyweight Vinnie Maddalone, 27-3 (19), posted a majority decision over former NABO Cruiser titlist Jermell Barnes, 17-13-1 (4), who hasn’t won a contest in his last nine appearances. Also, heavyweight Malachy Farrell, 15-0 (12), stopped Shannon Miller, 14-2 (8), in five while light welter hopeful Wayland Willingham, 10-0 (6), got Damon Antoine, 4-10-1 (2), out of there in two.

Tampa, Florida saw heavyweight Travis Walker, 20-0-1 (16), keep his unbeaten record intact via a points win over ten against Andrew Greeley, 11-14-2 (7). Philadelphia super middle Lajuan Simon, 15-0-2 (9), survived a scare at the hands of veteran Levan Easley, 17-13-2 (8), but managed to pull a split decision win out of the fire. 2000 US Olympian Dante Craig, 17-4-1 (13), made it out of Florida with a draw against Brazilian spoiler Cleiton Conceicao, 10-2-2 (8), over ten rounds at middleweight.

Heading west, in Temecula, California middleweight Enrique Ornelas, 25-2 (15), handily dispatched late replacement opponent Raul Munoz, 18-9-1 (14), (subbing for Sam Soliman) in the first frame of their scheduled eight rounder. Additionally, heavyweight Damian Wills, 21-0 (15), outpointed Cisse Salif, 18-7-2 (17), over eight.

Taking a trip east now, we land in Patumthani, Thailand where ex-longtime WBC Bamtamweight Veeraphol Sahaprom, 53-3-2 (38), returned from a loss to that title’s current champion, Hozumi Hasegawa, with a third round stoppage over rank novice Pascal Mhagama, 0-2 (0).

Onto another continent where Samuel Malinga, 18-4-2 (11), defended his domestic light welter title in Secunda, South Africa by stopping his nemesis, Lawrence Ngobeni, 31-7-4 (18), in the twelfth round. It’s the fourth time that Malinga has fought Ngobeni in the last two years.

Now it’s onto Europe where in San Mango d’Aquino, Italy, South American Super Flyweight titlist Sergio Carlos Santillan, 22-7-3 (9), took the IBF Intercontinental Flyweight belt from Guiseppe Lagana, 17-9-1 (7), via second round TKO.

Heading back to the Americas, in Tamaulipas, Mexico two domestic titles were contested as Jose Cabrera, 5-2-1 (2), won his fourth bout in a row by shocking former champ Valerio Sanchez, 18-14-2 (12), over twelve rounds for the vacant Mexican Flyweight crown and Francisco Paredes, 15-10-1 (14), retained his Mexican Bantamweight trophy with an eighth round stoppage of journeyman Arturo Estrada, 26-32-2 (12), in a rematch.

Still in Mexico, it’s on to Monterrey where we have more domestic action with ex-WBC Latino champ Guadalupe Rosales, 21-1 (13), hashing out a clear cut points victory over Zaid Zavaleta, 10-2-2 (6), to retain his Mexican Super Feather crown.

Heading south to sunny Chubut, Argentina, we had Diego Hermino Alejandro Sananco, 11-4-3 (3), crushing Ramon Armando Torres, 12-4-1 (4), with a third round knockout to annex the WBC Mundo Hispano Super Bantam title.

Next we head into Saturday and still in Argentina, this time Buenos Aires, where Rueben Eduardo Acosta, 12-1-4 (1), handled Nestor Fabian Casanova, 18-9 (8), for the second time over the last year and a half to take the South American Super Middle title.

Our next destination is north to Limon, Costa Rica where former WBO Latino/WBA Fedelatin Super Middle beltholder Henry Porras, 32-6-1 (24), manhandled overmatched rookie Engel Rosales, 0-2 (0), to the tune of a first round KO. \

Next stop, Mexico, where in Ciudad Obregon Alejandro Valdez, 16-2 (12), decisioned Adonis Rivas, 22-10-2 (10), to keep his NABF Super Bantam prize while ex-world title challenger Orlando Salido, 27-9-2 (18), predictably rubbed out Franner Trinidad, 1-2 (0), in the first round.

Sailing into the Caribbean, we strike land and make way to Ponce, Puerto Rico where Mario Santiago, 16-0 (11), held onto his WBC Cabofe Featherweight crown via fourth round stoppage of Andres Ledesma, 13-4-1 (8). Also, WBC Latino/WBA Fedecentro Flyweight kingpin Jose Lopez, 33-7-2 (29), won his seventh contest in a row by outpointing former WBO Minimumweight boss Kermin Guardia, 35-6 (21).

A massive detour brings us all the way to Africa where in Windhoek, Namibia Paulus “Hitman” Moses, 17-0 (12), kept his perfect record with a WBA Intercontinental Lightweight title winning effort against Romania’s Mihaita Mutu, 16-7-2 (8), over twelve rounds.

Next, it’s East London, South Africa where Oscar Chauke, 19-4-2 (6), picked up the biggest win of his career and the vacant South African Super Bantam belt with a tenth round finishing of Mzikayise Mchasi, 8-2 (4).

After a long flight to Europe, its Saale, Germany where Norman Schuster, 10-1 (2), had to climb off the canvas in the ninth to win the German Welterweight title over Turgay Uzun on points.

Lastly, we end this week’s global expedition with a return to America, this time El Paso, Texas. where two sons of former world champions continue to follow in the footsteps of their fathers as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 27-0-1 (21), ended the hopes of Jermaine White, 14-2 (7), in the fourth to take the WBC Youth Light Middleweight title (despite both Chavez and White weighing in at under the welterweight limit) and Jorge Paez, Jr, 10-0 (7), decisioned Armand Horn, 13-2 (11), over six.

  • Chris Billam-Smith vs Ryan Rozicki 03/06/2026
Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

Weight Usyk was too heavy? Usyk not taking the fight seriously? Ukraine war on his mind? 7 posts - 5 participants Read full topic […]
