Boxing Result: Witter Captures WBC Crown

At the Alexandra Palace in London, England, Junior Witter annexed the vacant WBC Light Welterweight title by recording a unanimous decision win over former WBO titlist DeMarcus Corley, joining Joe Calzaghe, Johnny Nelson, Scott Harrison, Ricky Hatton and Clinton Woods as a British based world champion.

It wasn’t the most exciting contest in recent memory as neither man would commit to a sustained offense but Witter displayed amazing reflexes. The Bradford man baffled one of the division’s most experienced men and avoided most of Corley’s southpaw efforts through sheer
mongoose-like awkwardness.

The only real drama came in the fifth round when Witter unleashed a sizzling counter right that definitely affected Corley, who fought on reduced ambition the rest of the way.

The fighters tried to get a punch up going in the twelfth and final frame but nothing much came of it and Witter was declared the winner by scores of 118-112, 117-111 and 116-113
for the unanimous decision.

Immediately after the bout Witter, now 34-1-2 (19), reaffirmed his longtime desire to meet
Ring Magazine’s Light Welter Champion Ricky Hatton in the ring. Corley, 31-5-1 (17), returns to Washington D.C. on the heels of losing his third consecutive world title bout.
