Last night at the MGM Grand, WBC Super Feather Champion Marco Antonio Barrera stamped his authority all over the boxing ring as the Mexican living legend orchestrated a master class of technique and stifled the dreams of Rocky Juarez.
It was a solid card put on by Golden Boy, three class world title bouts worthy of HBO PPV status but it was the consummate professional Barrera, 63-4 (42), who stole the show. Making the mistake of fighting Juarez’s fight in the first meeting between the two back in May, this time the “Baby Faced Assassin” (walked into the ring by a sombrero wearing Ricky Hatton) controlled the pace throughout the match and made Juarez, 25-3 (18), dance to his tune on the way to a 117-111 and 115-113 (twice).
Israel Vasquez, 41-3 (30), held on to his WBC Super Bantam belt but had to pull himself off the floor twice before turning the tables on heavy-handed challenger Jhonny Gonzalez, 33-5 (28), and stopping the 25 year old from Mexico at 2:09 of the tenth round.
Ex-WBO Super Bantam kingpin Joan Guzman, 26-0 (17), took a narrow split decision victory over reigning WBO Super Featherweight Champion Jorge Barrios, 46-3-1 (33), in a real back and forth battle. Barrios had already lost the title on the scales the day before at the weigh-in and losing a point for a low blow in the sixth frame finished the job as scores of 115-112, 114-113 in favor of Guzman won the day against the 114-113 score in favor of Barrios.
