Why Gennady Golovkin Is The Real Deal

ByJose Espinoza 29/07/2013

You need only read the latest comments from Sergio Martinez, who told Yahoo Sports that he’ll duck no one, including Gennady Golovkin, to realize the hype surrounding the up-and-coming middleweight fighter who grew up in Kazakhstan but currently resides in Germany.

Even in his beginnings as an amateur, there was an aura surrounding Golovkin.

He won the gold medal at the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships, beating the likes of Lucien Bute, Andy Lee and Matvey Korobov. At the 2004 summer Olympics, Golovkin added the silver medal to his resume beating out the likes of Andre Dirrell and Ramadan Yasser.

When Golovkin finally decided to make the jump to the professional ranks, his record during his time as an amateur stood at 345 wins and 5 losses.

Currently, the fighter known as GGG, holds the International Boxing Organization Middleweight title and the WBA World Middleweight title. His record after 27 fights stands at 27 wins with 24 knockouts, which includes an impressive victory against Matthew Macklin.

Golovkin is being hailed by boxing analysts as having all the attributes that make a fighter a superstar.

Have you ever noticed how Floyd Mayweather snarls his lips and shakes his head at opponents to let them know that their efforts to hurt him are futile? Manny Pacquiao also has a mannerism, he nods eagerly and bangs his gloves together after he takes a good shot.

In the case of Golvkin, he flattens his lips, raises his eyebrows, and nods his head slightly to the side before getting back to work. If you look back to all the great fighters in the history of the sport, you’ll notice they all have a cocky mannerism that makes them great at showmanship.

Take a closer look next time at Gennady Golovkin and you’ll notice how intelligently his promotional team, K2 Promotions, have marketed the 31 year old fighter.

He is hailed as a polite, sweet, young professional fighter with natural power in his fists; which let’s face it, is a refreshing change from all the antagonistic and hostile fighters that seem to be around in the sport of boxing. It definitely helps that he is a power puncher who shows great technique in the ring.

In terms of what is next for Golovkin, some analysts have thrown the names Sergio Martinez, Martin Murray and Curtis Stevens out there. It seems GGG has touched a nerve with some fighters, who are calling him out such as Martinez and Bernard Hopkins.

In the meantime, there is a tentative date set at Madison Square Gardens for November 2nd, which will see Golovkin enter the ring with HBO thankful to be broadcasting his fights.

You should check out what all the hype is about and decide whether or not he is the real deal!
