Dublin Plays Host To Massive Festival Of Amateur Boxing

ByBoxing Press 25/10/2013

The IABA’s Dublin County Board’s October Festival of Boxing’s Finals are being held this Halloween Bank Holiday Weekend in the Green Isle Hotel, Dublin 22, on Saturday the 26th of October and Sunday the 27th of October.

There are two Boxing Tournaments on Saturday the 26th October, firstly the Larry Collins Tournament which starts at 3pm sharp and secondly the John Aylward Tournament which starts at 8pm sharp.

There are two Boxing Tournaments on Sunday the 27th October, firstly the George Earl Tournament which starts at 12 Noon sharp and secondly the Ben Macartney Tournament which starts at 4pm sharp.

Please find attached program details of the Boxers involved in their respective Finals, their Clubs, their Weights, their Bouts, their Opponents, their Corner and the sequence of Bouts for the four tournaments. There are some finals that are as yet not finalised and details of these matches are yet “To Be Announced” ( TBA ) soon.

There was a very large entry of Boxers from the IABA’s Dublin County Board’s Clubs as well as from IABA Boxing Clubs outside of Dublin such as Ryston BC, Carrickmacross BC, Dunboyne BC and An Garda Siochana BC, across all Tournaments in the IABA’s Dublin County Board’s October Festival of Boxing.

The entire Event was initially and primarily designed for adult Novices, with a Coaches’ rating system for each of their Boxer(s) on a scale from 0-10 ( Zero being an absolute beginner, 5 being an Improver and 10 being an Expert/National Champion ).

However, it very soon became apparent that some very skilled and experienced Boxers were considering entering the Tournaments. Therefore in the interest of fairness and to keep the Intermediate, Senior and Elite Boxers away from the Novices, a set of Female & Male Masters Tournaments for Expert Novices, Intermediates, Seniors and Elites were announced where experienced Boxers could compete fairly and safely against each other.

Further, the AIBA announced an increase in the maximum age for amateur participants in official boxing events from 34 years of age to 40 years of age.

By announcing and exploiting this new age increase for both Male & Female Boxing participants, the IABA’s Dublin County Board generated a lot of interest and entries from not only Novice Boxers entering their Tournaments but also from Intermediate Boxers, Senior Boxers, Elite Boxers from the Irish HPU and in fact some of the IABA’s Boxing Coaches who are making a comeback in the Masters !

The IABA’s Dublin County Board has taken over the Green Isle Hotel in Dublin 22 for the entire October Bank Holiday Weekend ( Halloween ) for the purposes of holding all the Boxing Finals and also on the Monday the 28th October a Black Tie Ball is being held by the IABA Dublin County Board in the Main Ballroom of the Hotel for the presentation of the Tournaments’ Cups to the outstanding Boxers of the Festival and importantly to commemorate the great Dublin Boxing Legends in who’s honour the Tournaments Cups are being named after and presented.

All Tournaments’ Finals shall be judged and scored via the new “10 Point Must” scoring system with a full complement of R&J’s from the IABA’s Dublin County Board being present for all Boxing Final Bouts. Gold and Silver Medals will be presented to each Final’s Winner and Runner Up, directly following the conclusion of that Final’s Bout.

The 7 Perpetual Cups shall be presented at the Black Tie Ball Event on Monday evening the 28th of October. The Cups shall be presented to those Boxers, who in the opinion of the IABA Dublin County Board’s R&Js Commission, showed outstanding boxing skills and ability and who best epitomises the spirit, heart and discipline of our sport, science and art.

Please note that individual gold Medal Winners shall not necessarily be Cup(s) Winners and that every finalist, winner or runner up, has the opportunity to win a Cup or indeed Cups.

Tickets are now on sale for each of the four Boxing Tournaments being held over the Halloween Bank Holiday Weekend. Tournament Entry Tickets are € 20 for each individual Tournament, however there is a Multi-Tournament Entry Ticket on sale for a discounted price of € 50 for those people who want to go to all four Tournaments.

Children under 12, full time Students and Senior Citizens/Pensioners only can pay at the door of the event for a reduced price of € 10 per individual person/per individual tournament, upon production at the door of official proof of age in the case of children under 12, a valid and current full-time Student Card in the case of full time Students or a valid and current Senior Citizens Travel Card in the case of Senior Citizens/Pensioners.

Tickets are available to any of the individual Boxing Tournaments ( € 20 ), a Multi-Tournament Ticket ( € 50 ) or indeed tickets the Black Tie Ball ( € 90 per pair of tickets ). • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Why was Usyk so bad? 27/05/2026
What was the major factor for Usyk to perform so poorly against Rico? Rico better than expected, skilled kick boxer, huge size, awkward style, surprise element? Age of Usyk finally showing up? Weight Usyk was too heavy? Usyk not taking the fight seriously? Ukraine war on his mind? 4 posts - 4 participants Read full topic […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
