Michael Moorer Returns to Boxing

ByBoxing Press 03/11/2006

In the Heavyweight division, a fighter is always just one punch away from glory. When you’re a three-time holder of the sport’s most prestigious crown, your odds are even better, so with boxing’s glamour division wide open and in need of a spark of life, Michael Moorer has returned to provide that spark, beginning with a 10 round bout against hard-hitting Cliff Couser on Saturday, December 9th at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena in Hollywood, Florida.

“Night of Heavyweights”, which is presented by Seminole Warriors Boxing, will also feature unbeaten young gun Roman Greenberg.

It’s the biggest and most explosive card of 2006 – we’ve saved the best for last.

One of boxing’s most feared punchers, Michael Moorer (47-4-1, 37 KOs) terrorized the light heavyweight division when he ruled for over two years as WBO champion. Moving up to the heavyweight class after relinquishing his crown, Moorer defeated Bert Cooper in an unforgettable war in 1992 to win the WBO heavyweight title, and then showed another dimension to his game when he outboxed Evander Holyfield over 12 rounds to win the WBA and IBF heavyweight championships in April of 1994. Later that year, Moorer would be upset by hall of famer George Foreman, but by June of 1996, “Double M’ had regained the IBF title by defeating Axel Schulz, and he would hold the belt until he lost to Holyfield in a 1997 rematch. After a three year layoff, Moorer returned to the ring and compiled an impressive 8-2-1 record capped off by a ninth round stoppage of former world champion Vassiliy Jirov in December of 2004. Moorer then moved outside the ring to work as a trainer and received many positive notices on his work in the corner, but on December 9th, the former champ will return to his first love – fighting.

A devastating puncher who lives up to his nickname “The Twin Tyson”, St. Louis’ Cliff Couser (26-10-2, 14 KOs) has been in and around the heavyweight division’s Top 20 for nearly a decade. Holder of wins over James “Quick’ Tillis, Jorge Luis Gonzalez, and Dale Crowe, Couser is coming off a fourth round TKO win over Troy Beets in April that earned him the NAMA North American championship.

Only 24 years old, Tel Aviv native Roman Greenberg (22-0, 15 KOs) has been improving with each fight as he approaches his physical prime. Six foot three, and with the ability to box or bang in the ring, Greenberg has been a consensus pick among fight insiders as a heavyweight to watch in the coming years. A recent winner of the IBO Intercontinental heavyweight championship, Greenberg holds wins over veterans Kendrick Releford and Julius Francis and is eager to make a good impression in his US pay-per-view debut.

An exciting undercard will be announced shortly.

Tickets are on sale now for “Night of The Heavyweights”. They are priced at $150, $100, $50 and $25. Doors open at 6:30pm and the first fight starts at 7:30pm. For more information please call the Hard Rock Live Box Office or visit www.ticketmaster.com.

He’s Eddies mate and I know they’ve been doing interviews since before either of them really had a profile…but Eddie still gives Kugan wayyyyy too much latitude in the interviews that Hearn needs to resonate with the public. Don’t we? Let’s cut all of the bullshit here. This is the only fight worth a $100 PPV buy, it’s Jai Opetai v David Benavidez. Canelo is in the background now. He is not worthy of paying any attention to at this point and time. Plus, since Crawford is retired, he is not worth mentioning either, even if he comes back to fight Boots… There is no other fight on […]
