Boxing Info: Elvin Ayala – David Banks

ByBoxing Press 22/11/2006

Cappiello Promotions in association with Don Chargin Productions has announced that undefeated New Haven, Connecticut super-middleweight prospect Elvin Ayala (16-0, 7 KOs) will now take on Portland, Oregon’s David Banks (11-1-1, 2 KOs) in the main event of his Friday, November 24 Telefutura fight card at The Roxy in Boston.

Ayala’s originally slated opponent, Freddy Cuevas, was forced to withdraw from the fight due to an injury he sustained, while training last week. ” It’s unfortunate that the fight between Elvin and Cuevas didn’t go off, but this is boxing, and these things happen, ” Cappiello states. ” Cuevas has been in with some big-name fighters and it would have really given Elvin a chance to show how good he truly is.

But don’t get me wrong, Banks is a very capable opponent. He has only one loss, and he is by no means travelling cross-country to lose! Banks is coming to Boston to win, and Elvin knows that. Elvin knows this fight is going to be televised nation-wide on Telefutura, and that this is his chance to shine in front of a tremendous television audience.”

The evening’s co-feature bout will pit Massachusetts’s Castulo Gonzalez (7-2, 3 KOs) against Puerto Rico’s Priest Smalls (18-11-1, 6 KOs) in an eight-round featherweight bout. It will be the first time Gonzalez enters the ring since he last fought in February, suffering a TKO (9) to the newly crowned USBA junior-featherweight titlist, Mike Oliver. Smalls, a thirteen-year, thirty fight veteran, recently earned an eight-round split-decision victory over Peter Frissina in his last bout, on September 29.

“It will be nice to see Castulo climb back in the ring,” says Cappiello. ” I still believe he is one of the area’s better prospects, and his is very exciting to watch. In his fight with Mike Oliver, he fought a very tough fight. Mikey was just the better guy that night, but the kid can fight! I’m glad to see him back in action, and I’m thrilled to have him on this card! He’s going to be in there with a very seasoned veteran, and a very tough fighter in Smalls. A win over Smalls would be really big. Castulo knows he can fight, but a win on the 24th would be a great confidence booster for him.”

On the undercard…
Two local undefeated cruiserweights will square off in a four-round attraction, when Stoughton, Massachusett’s Chris McInerny (6-0-1, 3 KOs) steps in the ring with Pembroke, Massachusett’s Vinnie Carita (4-0, 4 KO’s).

Buddy McGirt trained featherweight prospect, Dat Nguyen (5-0, 3 KOs) takes on Georgia’s Charles Jones (3-7, 2 KOs), in a six-round featherweight bout.

Lowell, Mass junior welterweight Sean Eklund (1-2) will have his trainer / uncle “Irish” Micky Ward working his corner when he takes on Fred Thomas (0-4) in a four-round affair.

Jose Colon of New Bedford, Mass makes his pro-debut when he takes on New Haven, Connecticut’s William Foster (3-10-1, 1 KO) in a four-round junior welterweight bout.

Hamden, Connecticut’s Angela Brooks and Tanzee Daniel of Queens, NY both make their pro-debut, when they square off in a four-round cruiserweight fight.
