Darchinyan-Pacheco: Round by Round.

Newly crowned IBF flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan of Australia won his title by stopping previously unbeaten champion Irene Pacheco of Colombia. It was a back-and-forth battle that saw both men achieve dramatic successes. It could be said that the ten minute delay that stopped the action after the mid-way point of the fight was crucial in the eventual outcome. Darchinyan had been fading badly up until that point only to burst out of his corner almost fully reinvigorated to put Pacheco in all kinds of trouble. Round one: Both fighters are southpaws. Darchinyan shows no head movement at all and is always looking for power shots. Pacheco stays outside and looks to jab and box, he lands some decent uppercuts. Darchinyan is very aggressive and has a lot of success with straight left hands, his hands are very fast.

Round two: Darchinyan is extremely fired up but he is relying far too much on getting his left hand through. The action mixes up nicely with both fighters have considerable success.

Round three: Darchinyan lands several combinations to good effect, everything he throws is meant to hurt but he does nothing behind a jab. Pacheco looks more controlled and lands some neat counter-punches. Darchinyan is very annoyed at a head clash and shoves Pacheco who turns orthodox for a while.

Round four: Pacheco jolts Darchinyan with a very good counter-jab. Darchinyan looks to be coming apart as he is breathing very heavily already and starting to get caught with a lot of shots from the champion.

Round five: The early part of this round is definitely good for Pacheco as he lands many head shots on the challenger. Suddenly there is a head clash and Pacheco takes the worst of it, a cut appears over his brow but it does not seem to serious.

Round six: Darchinyan really does not set up his shots at all, he merely relies on the success of his first punch getting through so that others might follow. Pacheco is wearing Darchinyan down steadily and is landing much more accurately and consistently.

Round seven: Pacheco is much more organized but still manages to get hit a lot. Darchinyan is occasionally throwing jabs now but even those shots are being thrown with the menace of a power punch. The action is turning wild as they exchange combinations and seem to fling each other around with the impact of their respective attacks.

Round eight: An all-action round. Pacheco starts off boxing but soon they are both landing top-class combinations and most of them look like very hurtful punches. Pacheco really hurts Darchinyan with a head shot that almost puts him down, a very exciting round.

(The action is now delayed by ten minutes by fireworks that are exploding near the ring area).

Round nine: Darchinyan emerges from the extended break looking completely re-energized and begins to dominate. Darchinyan does a lot of damage with his straight left hand and Pacheco starts to get desperate. Pacheco is docked a point by the referee for hitting Darchinyan low.

Round ten: Darchinyan lands bomb after bomb in this round and Pacheco goes low agains but this time he is deducted two whole points by the referee. The fight is moving out of Pacheco’s control on the scorecards and he looks dangerously close to being stopped. Darchinyan lands a huge combination which culminates in a huge left hand that puts Pacheco on the canvas. The champion rises but is thoroughly exhausted.

Round eleven: Darchinyan absolutely jumps on a weary Pacheco and lands a continuous flurry of shots on the champion who is almost helpless against the ring ropes. Another massive left hand from Darchinyan puts the champion down and the referee stops the contest.

Juan Urango vs. Ubaldo Hernandez-Light welterweight attraction.

Round one: Urango looks like a southpaw version of Mike Tyson, he is stocky and strong but appears slow to move laterally and his handspeed does not look very fast. He does not jab. Hernandez stays on the outside away from Urango’s power and tries to box and looks like he wants to survive even before he has tasted that power. Hernandez goes to ground as the result of a sloppy exchange, it doesn’t look like a clean-cut punch put him down but he loses the round 10-8 anyway.

Round two: Urango is very slow except with the right hook. Urango also likes to load up for the lead uppercut. Hernandez still tries to box but is moved around the ring by Urango’s superior strength. Hernandez switches to southpaw and lands a few good combinations but Urango starts to come on. Urango lands a huge right hook, his best punch and Hernandez goes down. Hernandez makes no attempt to get up and sits on the canvas while the referee counts him out of the fight.
