Groves Stays Busy In UK While On Hunt For WBC Crown

ByMatchroom Boxing 26/10/2014

George Groves is back in action on November 22 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. The ‘Saint’ will defend his WBC Silver title against American Denis Douglin (17-3, 10 KOs) on a bumper bill topped by the domestic grudge match between Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Groves returns following a unanimous points victory over Christopher Rebrasse at the SSE Arena, Wembley in September, in which the Hammersmith boxer claimed the European and WBC Silver Super Middleweight titles, and became mandatory challenger for Anthony Dirrell’s WBC title.

‘’I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring,’’ said Groves. ‘’This is a chance for me to impress on a big card. I plan to steal the show! It’s a calculated risk, lose this fight and I lose my shot at Dirrell. But I want to stay active, I want to box as regularly as possible and I’m confident I can get the job done.

‘’I’ve good memories of fighting at the Echo Arena. It’s been a happy hunting ground for me in the past. I fought my third professional fight there against Paul Samuels and I picked up a lot of fans in Liverpool that night. They’re a lively bunch and I hope to bump into a few of them when I’m back in November.’’

‘’This is a big opportunity for me,’’ said Douglin. ‘’Win this fight and I’m a step closer to realising my dream of becoming world champion. Groves is a great boxer, it will be a tough fight but I’m ready to cause an upset. I’m coming to fight my fight and to beat Groves on his home turf.’’

‘’We’re pleased to get George out on another big UK show,’’ said Groves’ promoter Nisse Sauerland. ‘’He will face a tough test against Douglin and cannot afford to look past him. George will need to approach this as if it were a world title fight or could risk losing the WBC mandatory position.’’

“I’m delighted to add George to a huge night of British boxing on November 22 in Liverpool,” said Eddie Hearn. “You have three great Super Middleweights in action in George, James DeGale and Callum Smith who are all in big fights. There will be plenty of drama on fight night and in the build-up. We have had a run of great nights recently working together with Team Sauerland and we look forward to many more in the future.”

Groves’ clash with Douglin is part of a massive bill in Liverpool topped by the rematch between bitter rivals Cleverly and Bellew. One of Groves’ arch-enemies James DeGale takes on Marco Antonio Periban over 12 rounds at Super Middleweight, while the exciting Liverpool Super Middleweight Callum Smith faces Nikola Sjekloca in a WBC title eliminator.

There are two big World title fights on the bill as Scott Quigg defends his WBA Super Bantamweight title against Japan’s Hidenori Otake, while WBA Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell puts his strap on the line against Columbian Walberto Ramos. Heavyweight sensation Anthony Joshua MBE defends his WBC International title against Michael Sprott in a British title eliminator and Liverpool Super Featherweight Stephen Smith is also set for action.

  • Kugan Should Retire! 16/09/2026
He’s Eddies mate and I know they’ve been doing interviews since before either of them really had a profile…but Eddie still gives Kugan wayyyyy too much latitude in the interviews that Hearn needs to resonate with the public. Kugan constantly cuts across him, with some meaningless aside, or to tries to get a rubbish ‘gotcha’, for no reason. There are better i […]

  • Ain't we all want to see Jai v David? 14/09/2026
Don’t we? Let’s cut all of the bullshit here. This is the only fight worth a $100 PPV buy, it’s Jai Opetai v David Benavidez. Canelo is in the background now. He is not worthy of paying any attention to at this point and time. Plus, since Crawford is retired, he is not worth mentioning either, even if he comes back to fight Boots… There is no other fight on […]
  • Where does Conor Benn go from here? 14/09/2026
Conor Benn has been exposed as a no better than a Misfit fighter. He has just been destroyed in 2 rounds for an undeserved Welterweight world title. His best win is against a faded if not shot Eubank Jnr at middleweight. So where does Conor go from here? Conor has already managed to secure a multimillion contract from Zuffa which may be in jeopardy. As a res […]

I did it. Ran a half marathon in training last week Sunday. I did it in 3 hours, but I did it… lolol… I could do it in 2 and 1/2 hours though. For the first time, I walked a good bit of the distance… And the shoes I had on was not good for long distances. So, I started to get pains in my ankles, Achilles and ACL… But with the right shoes I can def do that in […]

  • Hrgovic's career path 05/09/2026
Hrgovic has finally made it to the mountain as IBF world champion. He has himself to blame for not training hard enough or working on his conditioning, and his management team for failing to get him a title shot sooner. I get it. He wasn’t born with boxing’s golden ticket — he isn’t American or British. His only loss came on a night when a dirty Dubois had h […]
