World Weekend Boxing Roundup: Braehmer, Lemieux, Pascal, Nava

ByWellington Amadulu 09/12/2014

This past Saturday witnessed a few intriguing matchups across the world and we touch down in Oldenburg, Germany to kick things off.

WBA light heavyweight champ Juergen Braehmer, 45-2 (33), got right down to business as he planted bodyshots on challenger Pawel Glazewski, 23-3 (5), until the Pole crumpled to the canvas at 0:55 of the very first round.

In attendance ringside was WBO super middle king Arthur Abraham, perhaps indicating a move up in weight for “King Arthur”?

If so, the two-weight champion would be at a definite disadvantage against southpaw Braehmer, who appears to be far more capable than his backers give him credit for being.

More likely, Abraham was ringside to witness firsthand the very promising super middleweight Tyron Zeuge, 16-1 (10), who stamped out spirited resistance from Stjepan Bozic, 29-9 (19), with a sixth round stoppage, and European super middle champ Jack Culcay.

Culcay, 19-1 (10), had a good fight on his hands from challenger Karim Merroudj, 13-4-2 (1), on the way to posting a 119-109, 118-110, 116-113 points win.

Heading over to Mexico, there were two high-level Women’s boxing bouts, starting off at Centro de Usos Multiples in Hermosillo.

That’s where Jackie Nava, 31-4-3 (13), defeated Sayda Mosquera, 7-1 (6), on points after 10 rounds for the WBC and WBA female bantamweight belts.

At Arena Jose Sulaiman in Monterrey, Arely Mucino, 21-2-2 (10), outpointed Shindo Go, 14-3 (9), for the WBC female flyweight crown.

Heading north now and leaping over America, we land in boxing mad Montreal where there were some good contests at the Bell Center.

Former light heavyweight world champ Jean Pascal, 30-2-1- 1NC (17), was left scratching his head after Roberto Bolonti, 35-3-1NC (24), was dropped by a punch in a clinch after the referee called for a break.

Bolonti stayed on the canvas and the bout was declared a No Contest.

Had he won, Pascal was on track to challenge feared puncher Sergey Kovalev for the Russian’s WBO and IBF belts but now that intriguing clash, set for March in Canada, could be on hold.

Promising light heavyweight Shiller Hyppolite, 14-1 (10), halted Norbert Nemesapati, 15-2 (14), at 1:26 of the 11th frame for the WBC International Silver strap on the undercard.

And finally, we wrap things up in the US, where Canadian middleweight slugger David Lemieux, 33-2 (31), had to dig deep and overcome the big-hearted light middleweight Gabriel Rosado, 21-9 (13), who won a few rounds but was down in the third before being stopped with a closed left eye at 1:45 of the 10th round.

Lemieux retains the NABF belt after making a big American TV debut while Rosado has to go back to the drawing board after recording a 0-4-1NC mark in his last five appearances.

Chief support was provided by a competitive lightweight scrap between Thomas Dulorme, 22-1 (14), and Hank Lundy, 25-4-1 (12), as Dulorme pulled out a spit decision win for the NABF and NABO titles.
