Both World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero of Panama and challenger Ricardo Castillo of Mexico made the 122-pound limit Thursday, the day before their nationally televised 12-round title fight at the Seminole Hard Rock Resort & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
Caballero, who’s co-promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Seminole Warriors Boxing Promotions, weighed 121 pounds at the weigh-in at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena; Castillo came in at 122 pounds.
“Ricardo Castillo is a tough opponent,” said the 5-11 1/2-inch Caballero, whose nickname is “The Towering Inferno” because of his height and power. “But I’m going to continue to be the champion,” said Caballero, who has a record of 25-2 with 17 knockouts and his making his first defense of the title he won in November. “After I win I want to unify (titles) at 122 pounds.”
Castillo has a record of 32-3 with 22 knockouts. The card Friday, which will be televised on Telefutura’s “Solo Boxeo,” is co-promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Seminole Warriors Boxing Promotions.
Caballero, who is making his national television debut on Friday, is brimming with confidence after taking out Somsak Sithchatchawal by technical knockout in the third round on Oct. 4, 2006, in Sithchatchawal’s native country of Thailand.
“I want to tell Ricardo Castillo it cost me a lot to win this title in Thailand; something that not many Mexicans have been able to do,” said the confident Caballero. “I hope that he is prepared because he is going to know who ‘The Towering Inferno’ is. If he doesn’t know he can ask Ponce de Leon.
“There’s no more to say lets just wait for Friday because I’m going to continue being a champion and unify the title with any of the Mexican boxers. They are the fighters who are more prominent in the American boxing scene and I want to fight the best.”
