Ringside Boxing Report: NY Daily News Golden Gloves – Part III

The Theatre at Madison Square Garden held the last night of finals for New York’s 80th Annual Daily News Golden Gloves tournament this past Friday. The nearly sold-out Theatre held the last fifteen bouts in the open, novice and women’s divisions.

The 119 pound open championship between Christian Concepcion of John’s Gym and Juan Roman of Gleason’s Gym was full of non-stop action. Concepcion was relentless in throwing punches with a high level of activity. Roman was game for the challenge and answered with his own high level of punches.

During the fourth round, Roman could no longer keep up the same work rate as Concepcion , but seemed to be enjoying himself as he yelled out “Woo” with a smile on his face after being on the receiving end of a three punch combination. Concepcion won a 5-0 decision.

Ronkonkoma , L.I. resident Kathleen Walsh of Heavy Hitters BC made her way to the 138 pound championship knocking out her opponent in the semi-finals to face hard hitting Lasharraha Oliver of Dragone BC. Oliver backed up Walsh with straight rights in the first two rounds.

Walsh was able to begin to land her jab in third round, but another straight right from Oliver bloodied Walsh’s nose before the end of the round. Although Oliver won a 5-0 decision, Walsh showed tremendous heart and was determined not to give up.

The only stoppage of the finals was in the 110 pound women’s championship. Susan Merlucci (unattached) dominated the action against Emily Kramer of Team Free Form throughout the fight. The referee stopped the bout at 1:34 of the third round, feeling that Kramer could not properly defend herself.

Benson was a tough opponent coming out in the first round to make a statement by landing a quick jab that backed up Jacobs, who replied with a combination that sent Benson to the canvas for an 8 count.

It seemed that Benson began to tire as the fight progressed, while Jacobs continued to use blinding hand speed and a variety of combinations to win a 5-0 decision.

Nationally ranked and three time Golden Glove champion Danny Jacobs of Mendez Boxing showed why many feel he is one of the best amateur boxers in the sport when he faced Phillip Jackson-Benson of Gleason’s Gym for the 165 pound open championship.

Benson was a tough opponent coming out in the first round to make a statement by landing a quick jab that backed up Jacobs, who replied with a combination that sent Benson to the canvas for an 8 count.

Physical education major at Queens College, two-time Golden Gloves and defending champion Will Rosinsky of Starrett City BC faced Brooklyn resident Yuwshua Zadok from the Brotherhood BC. Rosinsky used a left jab to the body to work his way inside on Zadok and was in control for the entire fight, scoring a 5-0 decision victory.

The capacity crowd was treated to a variety of boxing celebrities during intermission. IBF/IBO Heavyweight World champion Wladimir Klitschko presented awards to select participants in the Golden Gloves during a special ceremony.

Bill Gallo introduced several past champions: Iran Barkley, Mark Breland, Emile Griffith, Junior Jones, Carlos Ortiz, and Chuck Wepner as well as current professional fighters Lou Savarese, Travis Simms and Gary Starks.

Many of the fighters remained to sign autographs and take photos with fans.
