British Boxing: Craig Watson, Akaash Bhatia Win On Haye Undercard

By Ben Lettman

On the undercard of David Haye’s heavyweight debut against Tomasz Bonin on Friday night, welterweight Craig Watson scored three knockdowns against Robert Lloyd Taylor on his way to a one sided points victory at the Wembley Arena in London.

Watson, famous for scoring a knockdown against Amir Khan in the amateurs, knocked Taylor down in the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds to claim a unanimous points win.

Both fighters started off very slowly with Taylor perhaps doing the better work by using his reach to keep Watson at bay. It seemed that Taylor was cruising to a points victory when he was suddenly caught by a big left hook by Watson in the sixth.

The man from Middlesex was sent to the canvas in a big way but Taylor survived by clenching onto Watson.

In round seven, Taylor bravely mounted a comeback as he caught Watson with some quality punches. But just as he seemed to be getting back into the fight, Taylor was floored again, this time with a left hook to the body. Taylor got up at the referee’s count of eight and was only saved by the bell.

Midway through the eighth and final round, Taylor was caught with huge straight left hand, which once again sent him to the canvas. Taylor bravely summoned the strength to get back to his feet, but it was clear to everyone at ringside that Watson would not be denied. The final bell went and Watson was declared the winner by a score of 78-72.

Featherweight Akaash Bhatia successfully maintained his undefeated record by beating Dai Davies in an entertaining four round bout. Bhatia, fighting infront of his home fans, dominated the action from the start as he rocked Davies with several powerful shots.

Bhatia went on to win by 40-36 and the Londoner’s next fight will be a six rounder.
