HBO Boxing: Mayweather – De La Hoya Breaks PPV Sales Record

Time Warner’s HBO Pay Per View arm (formerly known as TVKO) has announced that this past Saturday night’s WBC Jr. Middleweight title between Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has set the all time record for PPV sales in any sporting event.

The official tabulation was 2.15 million PPV buys, comprised of 1,225,000 buys from cable systems and 925,000 buys from satellite homes throughout the 50 United States. The bout grossed 120 million dollars in sales, in addition to an 19.3 million dollar live gate record for any fighting event.

With this perfunctory record, Oscar de la Hoya passes both Mike Tyson (545 million) and Evander Holyfield (543 million) for the all time lead in pay per sales for any sporting event. De La Hoya’s adjusted gross figure now stands at a whopping 583 million dollars.

More on whether the new champion Floyd Mayweather will grant Oscar de la Hoya an immediate rematch, considering the closeness of the bout, and the amount of money to be made. Oscar de la Hoya now leads Mike Tyson by 160,000 PPV buys.
