Boxing Result: Cristian Mijares – Teppei Kikui

It was a big night at the fights last evening at the Auditorio Centario in Gomez Palacio, Mexico with one world title fight and two world title eliminators taking place.

Headlining the show was hometown hero and WBC Super Fly Champion Cristian Mijares, who battled Japanese visitor Teppei Kikui in a scheduled twelve round title defense and drew over 10,000 fans to the arena.

Mijares, a southpaw, was coming off a highly successful first defense of his title, confidently drubbing heavy favorite Jorge Arce by a wide points decision in April and at first glance it seemed that Kikui was out of his depth.

The man from Yokohama had never boxed outside of Japan and had lost the domestic super flyweight title in his previous bout in February.

Once the action started it was clear that Kikui was taking a step too far in challenging for a world title and the highly skilled southpaw champion gave his rival a thorough boxing lesson.

Kikui was unable to get to grips with his far more experienced opponent and finally began to wilt in the later rounds, getting stopped in the tenth after soaking up considerable punishment.

Mijares improves to 32-3-2 (13) while Kikui drops to 21-6 (4).

On the undercard, Lorenzo Trejo, 30-15 (17), climbed off the canvas to impressively knock out Erik Ramirez, 20-5-1 (15), in the sixth to win a WBC Minimumweight title eliminator.

Featherweight Gamaliel Diaz, 22-6-2 (9), handed Brooklyn’s Elio Rojas, 19-1 (13), his first pro loss via points decision to win a WBC eliminator. It was a rough fight with both men losing points for infractions but Diaz held on to an early lead through some rocky moments late in the bout.
