Meager on European Title quest

ByBoxing Press 23/08/2007

Lee Meager is on a quest to earn a shot at European Lightweight Champion Yuri Romanov, starting at the The Dome at Doncaster Lakeside on Friday, September 7.

The former British champion returns to action after losing his domestic belt in a non-title bout as support to Junior Witter’s WBC world light-welterweight title defence against Guyana’s Vivian Harris on the Hennessy Sports show which will be screened live by Sky Sports and is sponsored by GoldenPalace.com.

Meager, from Salford, lost on points to fellow Hennessy Sports boxer Jon Thaxton after a thrilling encounter in December.

But now refreshed after a break from the ring, Meager is ready to return and is targeting the European title to move his career on to the next level.

“I was devastated and wanted a good rest before I came back,” said Lee, who is based in London with trainer Robert McCracken.

“I let myself down in that fight but have learnt from my mistakes. I lost my way a bit after winning the title and fights are won and lost by your preparation.

“I’m taking it more seriously now and it means everything to me now. I’m giving it everything I’ve got.

“A shot at Romanov would be great. I’m at the right age and experience now for that sort of fight. I’ve seen him fight over here and he’s strong, but I think I will be too skilful.”

Promoter Mick Hennessy is not concerned about putting Meager in against Romanov, who has beaten three Britons on these shores.

“We would be very interested in the Romanov fight and I think Lee is ready for it,” said Mick.

“I’ve got high hopes for Lee. Unfortunately for Lee, he didn’t get the chance to make a voluntary defence of his British title and had a top notch lightweight like Jon Thaxton put on him for his mandatory defence.

“It’s testament to Lee Meager that he met Jon head on and gave a great account of himself but on that particular night ran into Thaxton at his very best and the best he has ever been. That was the two best lightweights in the country against each other that night.

“Lee has got one of the best hearts and chins in the business and can be a champion again.”

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]
