Round by Round: Samuel Peter vs. Yanqui Diaz.

ByJim Cawkwell 22/01/200526/08/2005

Tonight in the American Airlines Arena in Miami, the heavyweight contest between Samuel Peter and Yanqui Diaz ended in the fifth round when Diaz was put down for the fifth and last time. Peter, from Nigeria moves his record to twenty-two wins with no losses and remains a viable contender in the heavyweight division. Peter declared his desire to fight Vitali Klitschko after the fight. Peter looked slow and disorganized throughout the fight but undeniably powerful, excitingly so. Peter will make some noise in the division but he will have to introduce more of his boxing skills that were somewhat hidden during this fight.

Read on for the official Saddoboxing.com round by round report.

Round one: Peter opens with a stiff jab. Diaz looks cautious and stays on the outside. Diaz gets caught with a powerful right hand and rightly opts to take a knee to avoid further punishment. Peter looks very solid and seems to hurt Diaz with rights and lefts. Peter spends most of the round patiently stalking Diaz.

Round two: Diaz jabs from the outside and moves well. Peter looks pretty disorganized for the most part and dtarts to swing wildly with his shots. Peter is slow but very strong. At the rounds end, Peter lands a huge right that decks Diaz but is adjudged to have intentionally fouled Diaz by referee Brian Garry who then deducts two points from Peter’s score.

Round three: Diaz scores well from the outside against Peter’s authoritative jabbing. Peter looks threatening but Diaz manages to steal the round with the better shots landed throughout.

Round four: Diaz is doing well from the outside, especially with right hand counters. Peter is not too creative and does not look to open Diaz up but rather he looks to club his way inside. Peter manages to pin Diaz on the ropes and unloads with a succession of right hands that put Diaz down again. Diaz goes down once more before the end of the round as a result of a Peter left-hhok to the body.

Round five: It is not long before Peter is all over Diaz and he has him down once again. This time, the signal comes from Diaz’s corber to stop the fight and the fight is over.

The winner by TKO in the fifth round, Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter.

  • Hrgovic's career path 05/09/2026
Hrgovic has finally made it to the mountain as IBF world champion. He has himself to blame for not training hard enough or working on his conditioning, and his management team for failing to get him a title shot sooner. I get it. He wasn’t born with boxing’s golden ticket — he isn’t American or British. His only loss came on a night when a dirty Dubois had h […]

  • Hrgovic sparred with Deontay- He had no fear of Itauma's power 02/09/2026
That was just the truth. Yes, Itauma has great power. But Filip was in there training with, arguably, the hardest hitter the division has ever seen. He could never be afraid of Itauma. That was a critical mental edge Filip had over Itauma. 5 posts - 4 participants Read full topic […]

  • Can we stop rushing prospects now? 30/08/2026
Can we now allow these prospects to develop on their own time now, please? There is a reason for rankings and a reason why more experienced fighters win. What happened with Richard Torrez Jr and now with Moses Itauma should not happen. We’ve been rushing these boys. We also threw Jared Anderson in the dumpster. But, in my opinion, Anderson never really had i […]
