Round by Round: Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Henry Bruseles.

ByJim Cawkwell 22/01/200526/08/2005

“Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr. closed the show in style tonight with a classy if predictable eighth round stoppage of overmatched Henry “El Nitro” Bruseles. Mayweather put on a masterclass of offensive and defensive boxing while Bruseles was merely an observer for much of the fight. Flashing left hooks, snappy jabs to the head and body, right hands and uppercuts, Mayweather did it all and landed approximately fifty-percent of his punches throughout the fight. The fight was simply a workout for Mayweather before his projected fight with Arturo Gatti for the WBC light welterweight championship later this year. Gatti will defend his title against veteran Jesse James Leija on HBO next week.

Round one: Mayweather jabs and looks for the quick left hook from the outside. Bruslees does not look content to lay down in front of Mayweather and has some success in getting his shots off and backing Floyd up. Mayweather’s jab is on top form as he goes with it to the head and body. Mayweather looks slick in defense and he does his best work with some great right hands.

Round two: Mayweather taps Bruseles’s lead hand to try and bring it down so that he can launch his own right hand. Bruseles is less successful in this round but looks pretty solid. Mayweather is far too fast for him though.

Round three: Bruseles goes to the body but gets cracked with some very hard shots. Mayweather’s quickness is impressive and he lands at will. Bruseles lands some decent shots but they do not budge Mayweather.

Round four: Mayweather uses this round to stand shoulder to shoulder with Bruseles. Mayweather lands a ton of right hand shots and it is an entertaining round.

Round five: Mayweather is again intent to stand and trade shots with Bruseles but he gives the term a new meaning: He hits and does not get hit back. Bruseles is getting hit with everything but the kitchen sink but he doe snot look like cracking under the pressure anytime soon.

Round six: Mayweather cannot miss and starts to hurt Bruseles with left and right hands. Bruseles begins to look as if he might go down but he hangs in there to see out the round.

Round seven: It is a Mayweather masterclass. Jim Lampley starts talking American football with Roy Jones Jr. at ringside and Mayweather interjects himself into thew conversation. Mayweather sees out the round by landing a series of fantastic right uppercuts that must be taking a lot out of Bruseles who is all but an irrelevant force in offense.

Round eight: Mayweather continues to talk AMerican football with Lampley while he is fighting Bruseles. Bruseles finally cracks under the enormous pressure of Mayweather’s punch volume as a right to the body puts him down. Mayweather dances towards him and lashes out at him once again with a series of shots, culminating with a left hook that deposits Bruseles on the canvas for the second time in the round. Bruseles’ corner signals that they want the fight stopped.

The winner, and still undefeated, “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]
