Boxing Result: Johnathan Williams Upsets Eric “Night Train” Boose

ByBoxing Press 07/10/2007

Last night at the Lucky Eagel Casino in Rochester, WA, Jonathan “Too Sweet” Williams, 7-5 (6), defeated Eric “The Night Train” Boose, 12-2-1 (7), in a controversial TKO 2:39 seconds into the second round to take the NWBA Heavyweight title.

The punches hit like thunder and lightning as the fighters collided in the ring. Much like lightning strikes a large tree and takes it down out of nowhere, the same could be said of Williams’ fist hitting Boose’s muscular body at the end of the first round, sending Boose crashing to the mat.

Then, Williams sucker-punched Boose while he was still struggling to get up from the mat. With no call from the ref, the crowd jumped to their feet and booed loudly.
The fight was allowed to continue despite the protest from Boose’s corner that the fight should end with William’s disqualification for his dirty fighting. Instead, Boose stumbled around the ring getting hammered by further blows from Williams until finally the fight was called TKO for Boose’s own protection.

There was nothing sweet about how this title was transferred from Boose the “Night Train” to “Too Sweet” Williams.

On the undercard, light heavyweights Luis Lopez, 13-10-1 (5), and Manny Castillo, 13-14-3 (5), fought to a majority four round draw. Castillio was more of a showman than a fighter, blowing kisses at Lopez and taunting him wildly, while Lopez sneered back, eyes burning behind a dark bearded mask of facial hair and body ink.

Resentful, Lopez landed some deafening body shots but Castillio would grimace momentarily and return to ridiculing his opponent. In the end, Lopez could not harm the thick skinned Castillio, whose showmanship and timely jab allowed him to narrowly pull even for a majority draw. Judges scored the fight 39-37, 38-38, 38-38.

Heavyweight Leo Bercier defeated Channing Denontiney by TKO in 3:00 minutes of the second round. Denontiney charged out of his corner in the first round like it was all you could eat night at the Lucky Eagle Buffet.

The portly Denontiney was hungry for a victory, but in the end it was his sagging tummy that got in the way. Bercier targeted Denontiney’s soft underbelly, and his gloves thumped Denontiney’s plump abdomen until he could not take it anymore.

After being dropped twice in the second round with two devastating gut busting wallops, Denontiney decided not to answer the bell to start the third round, thus disqualify himself and his drooping waistline.

Welterweight Lester Belmores, 4-7 (1), defeated Dustin Neely, 2-1 (1), in a four round unanimous decision. Neely was hyped up right from the beginning, bouncing around the ring with eyes wide like a child whose eaten too much candy and had a few shots of espresso.

Neely was consistently over-reaching Belmores, swinging hard but missing his quick-footed contender. Although Neely kept the action coming with lots of punches, his weakness could not be denied in the second round when he kept dropping his left hand allowing a hole for Belmores to sneak in solid right hooks that repeatedly dropped Neely to his knees. In the end, it was the right hooks that won this fight for Belmores.

Welter Tammie Johnson, 1-0 (0), defeated Jana Simms, 0-2-2 (0), in a four round unanimous decision. From the first bell, Johnson came out of the corner like a tazmanian devil, swinging her arms wildly.

She dominated the fight, chasing Simms around the ring like a tornado of sloppy punches. At first, it seemed like a patient, more experienced Simms was simply waiting for her opponent to tire out so she could strike, but if she was waiting, her opportunity passed, as the pummeling she took in the first three rounds equally tired her out by the end of the forth round. Johnson won her first professional fight of her career.

Super middle Michael Birthmark, 1-0 (0), defeated Lyle Johnson, 3-1 (1), in a four round unanimous decision. Johnson started out with his left shoulder forward and his glove dropped loosely below his waist, perhaps already anticipating the beating he was about to get from the rookie fighter.

Birthmark with reflexes like a cat, began striking his opponent with precise and intentional jabs. He landed some left hooks in the second round, his endless energy never dwindling, finishing the third round with a smile, still undaunted like it was only the first.

Birthmark charged out of his corner in the fourth round attacking Johnson with a series of punches. Johnson was unable to keep up with the rookie, and while Birthmark won his first professional match, Johnson suffered his first loss.

Welterweight Phillip Moore, 2-0 (0), defeated Frank Bybee, 4-11 (0), by TKO in three minutes of the third round. Bybee came out of his corner crouched down like a tiger, pushing Moore against the ropes as they circled the ring.

In the second round, Moore started to look like the dominant fighter as he landed a few powerful punches to Bybee’s head, but it wasn’t until the third round that Bybee’s exhaustion overtook him.

Moore landed a solid shot to Bybee’s stomach and dropped him. Bybee tried to regain his breath and control, but got hit with another solid left hook to his body and was dropped again. The doctor decided Bybee had enough and the win went to Moore at the end of the third round.

Light heavyweight Ron Simmons, 1-2 (1), defeated Ross Haskins, 2-1 (0), by TKO in three minutes of the second round. A tall and lanky Haskins came jumping out of the corner, chasing Simmons around the ring. Haskins landed some solid punches at the end of the first round and finished the round strong, but the second round belonged to Simmons.

Simmons knocked Haskins to the ropes with a powerful right hook and then followed with another right hook that knocking Haskins to his knees. he round ended as Haskins hit the mat again and the doctor ruled that he was no longer eligible to fight.

For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport.
