Tyrone Brunson On Brink Of World KO Record

ByBoxing Press 10/10/200712/05/2013
Just three days out from his bid to break the world record for consecutive first round knockouts, middleweight Tyrone Brunson has left nothing to chance, honing already monumental skills to a razor’s edge for his scheduled appearance on a Settles Entertainment promotion this Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Chez Paree Club in Carter Lake, Iowa.

Like most fighters preparing for a bout, Brunson has spent many back-breaking hours in the gym, refining the exquisite techniques that have brought him to new heights in the brutal science of power punching as evidenced by his resume of 18 wins by first round KO, against no losses.

But the 22 year old sensation from Philadelphia has been forced to defy tradition in regard to an integral component of training camp that has come to define the warrior mentality possessed by fighters from the ironically named “City of Brotherly Love”.

“Tyrone has just moved to Las Vegas and his training has been great for this fight coming up on Saturday,” said Brunson’s promoter, Edward B. Mendy of Lion Heart Boxing.

“But people are just reluctant to get into the ring and spar with him. He went to a couple of gyms and after a few short sessions, no one would spar with him anymore and he obviously even wasn’t generating the same kind of intensity as he would during a fight.

“There’s always the feeling that he might embarrass someone, so in preparation for this fight, he’s had to rely on a lot of pad work instead of sparring.”

Brunson’s reputation as a world class puncher has brought him a growing degree of notoriety during his stoppage streak but it’s his uncanny ability to expertly deliver such torso-twisting bombs with startling speed and accuracy that has made the biggest impression upon his fellow combatants and industry insiders.

“Tyrone has fought most of his pro fights so far in Michigan and had the chance to do a lot of work in the Kronk Gym with Emanuel Steward,” said Mendy. “Emanuel was really high on Tyrone after Brunson sparred with IBF welter champ Kermit Cintron and did very well.

“Tyrone was also in the gym for five weeks with former IBF Light Middle titlist Kassim Ouma when Kassim was preparing to fight world middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and Tyrone did very well in sparring.”

As much as Team Brunson is relishing the extended moment in the spotlight that the KO record attempt has garnered, the weigh of the occasion is something that they’ll be glad to be unburdened of by the time the smoke clears this Saturday.

“We will all be relieved after this fight in Carter Lake, regardless of whether or not Tyrone pulls off the world record by getting his 19th consecutive first round knockout,” said Mendy.

“Tyrone will enjoy a brand new slate afterward and he’s looking forward to that almost like it was his pro debut all over again. Right now, there are a lot of people who are skeptical about Tyrone’s talent, but not the people who have seen him fight because they’re already believers in this kid.

“At Lion Heart Boxing, we’re an upstart company but we have a lot of good up and coming fighters like Tyrone as well as veterans such as the undefeated welterweight contender Antonio Mesquita, and they love working with us because we treat them fairly.

“We feel that Tyrone is following in the footsteps of the great Philadelphia fighters like Bernard Hopkins and we think that he can go all the way. From here on out, we want him to fight recognizable names, yardsticks that can be used to display his remarkable skill level as we partner to make a great impact on the sport of boxing.”

Settles Entertainment presents “Do Or Die”, an exciting night of boxing headlined by undefeated middleweight Tyrone Brunson, supported by a full undercard, at the Chez Paree Club, located at 1313 Locust Street, in Carter Lake, Iowa on Saturday, October 13, 2007. The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings.
