Stoke’s Scott Lawton Set For November Return

ByBoxing Press 25/10/2007

Werrington’s Scott Lawton will return to the ring at Stoke’s Kings Hall on 17 November only six weeks after facing Amir Khan. Lawton, the area’s most successful boxer since the 1930’s, is hoping to rebuild his career after suffering a fourth round stoppage defeat at the hands of the aforementioned Khan in a Commonwealth lightweight clash.

“I was very disappointed by the Khan result but I hadn’t realised just how good he was until then,” said Lawton. “I’m over it now and it’s time for me to move on.”

“My goal is to fight for the British title again and I’m confident that I’m good enough. I need to get active again and get back to winning ways, that’s how I’m going to get myself back up the rankings and ultimately get another crack at the title.”

Lawton will be joined on the bill by fellow Potters Jimmy Doherty and Scott Miller. Doherty now undefeated in his first six professional starts is set to step up and will contest an eight round welterweight contest; his opponent is yet to be confirmed. Miller, from the Birches Head district of the city, will make his much anticipated professional debut.

Scoring an impressive 21 victories from 25 bouts in the amateur ranks Miller, formerly of Hulton Abbey ABC, has an exciting style and is tipped to move up the domestic welterweight ranks quickly.

A freak sparring accident in September put out both Doherty and Miller forcing the postponement of Impact Boxingʼs September event. A further injury to Doherty forced Impact to postpone the rearranged October event until November. Both Doherty and Miller are now reportedly fit and eager to return to action.

A quartet of local fighters will be completed by Werrington heavyweight Alex Ibbs who will be seeking to continue his unbeaten start in professional boxing. Ibbs, having won both of his first two pro contests, was trained by former world champion Richie Woodhall but now trains with Impact Boxing in Stoke.

The line-up will be completed by the Chester duo of Chris Goodwin and Kevin Buckley. Goodwin a superb technician and exciting prospect has emerged victorious from both of his previous contests in Stoke. Super-featherweight Buckley has won his first three pro contests and earned many rave reviews last time out when he prevailed over Tony McQuade in front of a Sky TV audience. Buckley has been nominated as The North of England Young Boxer of the Year.

Impact Boxing will again offer concessionary prices for children aged 14 and under with tickets costing only £10. Adult tickets are priced at £25 or £45 for ringside seats. Tickets are available from Impact Boxing on 0845 156 7168 or at www.impactboxing.com
