Ring Promotions and Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing presented a night of boxing this past Thursday at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City featuring many favorite local fighters.

In the main event “Mean” Joe Greene from Jamaica, NY improved to 17-0 (12) with a unanimous decision victory over Patrick Thompson 12-12-1 (5) from Lincoln, NE. What appeared to be a showcase fight for Greene ended up being a long eight rounds as Greene struggled with some of the tactics of cagey veteran.

Greene landed the cleaner punches throughout the fight but was often smothered by the rough tactics of Thompson who clutched, grabbed and pushed Greene into the ropes all night. Greene’s frustration escalated as head butts and elbows were delivered without any warnings issued from the referee.

Through the second half of the eight round bout Greene unable to get any help from the referee turned to his corner during the fight looking for advice. His corner implored him to ignore the referee and let his hands go which he was not able to do effectively against the smothering tactics of Thompson.

Although Thompson seemed to be the busier fighter his combinations were sloppy and often landed on the arms and gloves of Greene who won by scores of 80-71, 79-73 and 78-74.

The co-feature featured Bronx, NY native Jorge “The Truth” Teron against Adrian “Canon” Navarette from Durango, Mexico for the vacant New York State Lightweight Championship. Originally slated as the main event the co-feature was the highlight of the evening with Teron putting on the finest performance of his career.

Teron put on a boxing clinic for the first few rounds keeping the Mexican brawler at bay with a stiff jab and fast punch combinations. During the middle rounds “The Truth” got the better of Navarette exchanging heavy blows with him that seemed to put him on rubber legs.

Teron went back and forth between boxing and brawling but stayed in control throughout the fight landing four and five punch combinations in the sixth and seventh rounds. Teron ducked under a left hook and dropped Navarette to the canvas with a strong right which stopped the action at 2:26 of the eighth round improving his record to 19-0-1 (12) while Navarette drops to 16-5-1 (13).

In an eight round special attraction Brooklyn, NY rising star Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin improved to 16-0 (13) with a quick second round TKO of Troy Lowry 27-8 (16) from St. Paul, MN.

The confident Quillin easily outworked Lowry who tried to hold his way through the first round but was still dropped by Quillin just before the bell. Although Lowry beat the count and made it back to his corner it was only 32 seconds into the second round when he was dropped again for the final time before the referee waived off the fight.

As always in his tradition after a victory “Kid Chocolate” threw chocolates out to the crowd which may have been more work than he had to exert in the ring that evening.

UNDERCARDS

Two-time New York Golden Gloves Champion Nagy Aguilera 5-0 (3) from Newburgh, NY remained undefeated against Darryl Holley from Brigantine, NJ 6-6 (1) in a scheduled six-round Heavyweight bout. Aguilera used good combinations to the head and body of Holley and landed several strong uppercuts that went unanswered forcing the referee to call the fight at 2:13 of round three.

In the Welterweight division Jeremy Bryan 2-0 (0) of Paterson, NJ scored a unanimous decision in a four-round feature against Broderick Antoine 2-4 (1) from Troy, NY. Bryan moved forward throughout the entire fight dominating as the bigger fighter which earned him scores of 40-36 on all three judges’ scorecards.

In a six-round female Bantamweight bout local fighter Noriko Kariya 8-2-1 (2) who hails from Toronto, Canada dominated the over-matched Salina Jordan 2-3 (1) from Denver, CO. Kariya landed crisp jabs and strong rights at will against Jordan who threw wide shots while receiving counter punches to her face. The referee stopped the action at 28 seconds into round three when Kariya unloaded several unanswered shots on the defenseless Jordan.

Three-time Golden Gloves Champion Darrel Madison 8-1 (3) from Long Island, NY out-boxed Sam Comming 4-5 (3) from Lansing, MI to a unanimous decision victory with scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55 in a six-round Heavyweight bout. The southpaw Madison used his jab and straight lefts to the head and body of the slower Thompson scoring at will through the first few rounds. Madison seemed to injure his left arm during the fourth round but continued to outbox Comming through the end of his fight utilizing his effective right jab.

In a four-round Lightweight bout Bronx, NY native Joe Arroyo made his professional debut in a tougher than expected fight against Raphael Luna of Albany, NY also making his professional debut. Arroyo controlled the fight well early but seemed to tire late in the fight which the harder punching Luna used to his advantage scoring a majority draw with scores of 38-38 twice and one judge scoring for Arroyo 39-37.
