Risum Boxing: Fawaz Nasir Ready To Return

ByBoxing Press 19/01/2008

Danish super middleweight Fawaz Nasir, 11-2 (6), is currently in training for a return to the ring in the near future, and he is hoping that 2008 will be the year where he takes the next considerable steps to fulfil his potential.

After two very close decision-defeats in title fights in Germany, Nasir has gained valuable experience, and he now hopes to build on that.

In February 2007 Nasir was edged by 115-114-115-113, 116-112 scores by undefeated WBO # 3 Sebastian Zbik in a fight for the WBO Intercontinental middleweight title, a bout that many ringside-observers felt the Dane deserved to win.

He then moved up to super middleweight, where he stopped Czech Wladimir Fecko in two rounds in May, and lost another close call (96-95, 96-94, 97-94) to WBA # 14 Lukas Wilaschek (then 17-0) in late July.

A wedding followed, which kept Nasir away from serious training for a while, but he is now back in coach Brian Mathiasen’s gym in Viby, just outside Aarhus.

Following the fight against Wilaschek, which Nasir seemed to be winning easily before mysteriously tiring badly in the second half of the ten-rounder, critical voices among the 28-year-olds handlers expressed concerns that Nasir didn’t sacrifice what it takes to make it all the way to the top of the European elite, but if all goes according to plans, a new run at success is now in the pipeline.

An announcement on Nasir’s first fight of 2008 is expected soon.
