Friday Night Boxing Results

ByRicky Jones 19/01/2008

The sport of kings is slowly waking up from it’s post-holiday slumber and while things get back to normal this evening, there were a few important bouts that took place across the globe last night.

We get the ball rolling at the Meadowside Leisure Centre in Burton-On-Trent, England where British Super Bantam ruler Esham Pickering, 33-6 (13), regained form at the expense of big-hearted aspirant Sean Hughes, 14-7-1 (1).

Hughes had defied all odds two months ago when he fought the contest of his life to defeat Pickering over eight rounds in a non-title affair but this time “Brown Sugar” was better prepared and stopped the lanky southpaw in nine.

On the undercard, welter Adan Amar, 20-1 (5), won his eighth in a row by stopping Canadian import Ian MacKillop, 25-10-3 (14), in the third frame. Also on the bill, light middle Muhsen Adaney Nasser, 15-0-1 (2), outpointed Tye Williams, 15-13-2 (4).

At Club Atletico in Rafaela, Argentina, Ulises David “Cloroformo” Lopez, 19-1 (10), knocked out ex-IBF Youth Welter kingpin Juan Manuel Alaggio, 17-6-1 (6), to retain the Argentine Light Middle for the second time. Welter Carlos Leonardo Herrera, 14-0 (5), stayed perfect with a six round points verdict over Juan Jose Dias, 4-3-2 (1).

Orlando Community Hall in Soweto, South Africa saw WBC International Super Flyweight titlist Evans Mbamba, 15-0 (7), pull a close split decision out of the fire against Unathi Gqokma, 8-3 (2), in a battle of southpaws.

The Palais des Sports de Gerland in Lyon, France was the scene of super bantam Arsen Martirosian, 11-1 (2), winning the vacant EBU-EE crown by unanimous decision against Nikita Lukin, 7-12-2 (2).

Heading way down to the tip of Florida in America, Mallory Square in Key West hosted the victory of big punching ex-WBA/WBO 140 lb Champ Randall Bailey, 36-6 (33), who gunned down Anthony Mora, 15-2 (10), in the fifth to annex the vacant WBO Latino Light Welter belt.

Damian Frias, 15-1 (7), and Derrick Moon, 12-15-1 (2), went to war at welterweight with Frias pulling off a split decision win to acquire the vacant WBC CABOF trophy.

Hammer-fisted cruiserweight Eric Fields, 11-0 (9), took a big step up in competition to annihilate former IBF titlist Kelvin “Concrete” Davis, 24-8-2 (17), in a single round. Davis has now dropped his last four contests.

We wind this recap up at Jacob Brown Auditorium in Brownsville, Texas where WBC Continental Americas 147 lb titlist Jesus Soto Karass, 19-3-3 (14), picked up a ten round decision win over Germaine Sanders, 27-5 (17), at a few pounds above welterweight.

Bantamweight contender Raul Martinez, 21-0 (13), won his biggest test to date by outpointing tough journeyman and former WBC Flyweight title challenger Alex “Ali” Baba, 26-12-1 (19), over eight rounds.

Prospect James de la Rosa, 14-0 (10), stayed on track with a second round KO of Abel Perry, 9-1 (3), at welter.

I did it. Ran a half marathon in training last week Sunday. I did it in 3 hours, but I did it… lolol… I could do it in 2 and 1/2 hours though. For the first time, I walked a good bit of the distance… And the shoes I had on was not good for long distances. So, I started to get pains in my ankles, Achilles and ACL… But with the right shoes I can def do that in […]

  • Hrgovic's career path 05/09/2026
Hrgovic has finally made it to the mountain as IBF world champion. He has himself to blame for not training hard enough or working on his conditioning, and his management team for failing to get him a title shot sooner. I get it. He wasn’t born with boxing’s golden ticket — he isn’t American or British. His only loss came on a night when a dirty Dubois had h […]

  • Hrgovic sparred with Deontay- He had no fear of Itauma's power 02/09/2026
That was just the truth. Yes, Itauma has great power. But Filip was in there training with, arguably, the hardest hitter the division has ever seen. He could never be afraid of Itauma. That was a critical mental edge Filip had over Itauma. 5 posts - 4 participants Read full topic […]
