Boxing Info: Rendall Munroe Vows To Shock Kiko Martinez

27 year old British super bantam Rendall Munroe put on the performance of his career in stopping opponent Marc Callaghan to win the English title this past October but the Leicester southpaw must overcome far greater odds if he is to lift the European title from bull-like reigning champion Kiko “La Sensacion” Martinez in their upcoming clash.

Munroe, 13-1 (6), challenges Martinez, 17-0 (14), on a Frank Maloney promotion at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham, England on Friday, March 7, 2008 and the flashy stylist has no illusions as to the degree of difficulty of his challenge to the hammer-fisted Spaniard.

Heading into this title tilt as the definite underdog, Munroe is undaunted by the occasion and remains focused on his only goal. “I’ve got nothing to lose,” he told The Leicester Mercury. “But I’m going there to win. There’s no way I’m not coming home without that belt.”

Martinez forced his way into prominence in a positively explosive manner on a hot night in Dublin in August of last year, gunning down European champion Bernard Dunne in a hail of left hooks and forever altering the world title aspirations of the Irish icon.

Despite this forceful display, Munroe fully expects to have far too much on offer for the Continental ruler when they meet in Nottingham. “I saw Martinez first against Dunne,” recalled Munroe.

“He came out swinging hooks and was too strong. He’s in for a shock if he thinks he can walk straight through me. Martinez won’t have fought another super bantamweight as strong as me before.”

A solid undercard supports the mouth-watering main event with resurgent Commonwealth bantamweight champion Jason Booth making the first defense of his crown when he meets ambitious African, Lante Addy of Ghana.

Veteran light heavyweight Brian Magee is matched against British Midlands Area titlist Tyrone Wright and promising prospect Scott Haywood will be challenged by highly seasoned Stoke strongman Gary Reid at light welter.

Top Irish heavyweight Scott Belshaw, Leicester middleweight Kevin Concepcion and Leeds featherweight Danny Wallace are also scheduled to appear.
