Saturday Night Boxing Results

ByRicky Jones 27/04/2008

All in all, it was a pretty good Saturday night and we start off south of the border with a big card in Queretaro, Mexico where at the Plaza de Toros Juriquilla, light middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., 36-0-1 (29), continued his meteoric rise with a ninth round KO of Italy’s 154 lb titlist Tobia Guiseppe Loriga, 24-1-1 (6).

The Italian started aggressively but a patient Chavez scored with effective counters and floored the visitor in the second frame. The European fought his way out of trouble and resumed the pressure but didn’t have enough power to interrupt the flow of Chavez, who continued to reduce Loriga’s energy with carefully selected hurtful counters.

Once he had worn his rival down, Chavez began to go on the offensive and was extracting a heavy toll on Loriga before straining an ankle in the seventh. Despite the injury, Chavez nailed Loriga with a full-blooded right hand that had the Italian Champion taking a much needed knee as he was counted out at 1:47 of the ninth frame.

Also on the bill, NABF Super Bantam Champ Bernabe Concepcion, 25-1-1 (14), of the Philippines won his 14th straight contest by finishing off Torrence Daniels, 10-4-1 (4), in the second round and two-time former world featherweight title challenger Orlando Salido, 30-9-2 (20), kept busy for his upcoming third title shot by stopping durable Panamanian Renan Acosta, 21-6 (6), in the fourth frame.

Former light welter contender Hector Camacho, Jr., 45-3-1 (25), was also in action, pounding out an eight round points win over Kenny Kost, 14-4 (6), at middleweight.

Before crossing the Pacific, we go further south to Argentina where at the Ce De M Club in Buenos Aires, Cesar Acevedo, 9-7-2 (4), proved that his South American Heavyweight title win over Gonzalo Omar Basile, 32-4 (14), last November was no fluke as Acevedo stopped Basile in the fifth in their third bout together.

Recent WBC Light Flyweight title challenger, 37 year old Luis Alberto Lazarte, 39-8-1 (17), defeated iron-chinned Juan Carlos Cejas, 8-25-3 (1), over six in a rematch and super feather Jonathan Victor Barros, 21-0-1 (11), kept on track with a six round points decision against Leandro Almagro, 6-8-1 (1).

Hitting Asia, we find ourselves at Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh where Thailand’s WBC Female Light Flyweight Champion Samson Sor Siriporn, 11-2 (2), had her hands full fending off the challenge of Japanese novice, Kayoko Ebata, 1-1 (0), before managing a majority decision victory.

At the Trans 7 Studio in Jakarta, Indonesia, hard punching local hero Roy Mukhlis, 18-2-2 (15), retained his PABA Super Feather belt with a second round stoppage of late replacement opponent Pathomphol Srisphoa, 3-4 (2), who was making his first foray outside his native Thailand.

The Indonesian Minimumweight crown was at stake on the undercard with Agus Situmorang, 4-1 (1), hammering out a ten round majority decision over Tommy Seran, 1-2 (0), to annex the title.

At the MPSC Gym in Cagayan De Oro City, Philippines, Eusebio Baluarte, 10-0 (5), crushed Yai Sithsaithong, 2-2 (1), in the first round for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific Youth Light Welter trophy and Phillipines Banatmweight Champ Eric Barcelona, 41-14-4 (13), kept his title with a sixth round stoppage of Phil Angcamor, 3-5-2 (1).

World famous boxing venue Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan saw the vacant OPBF Interim Super Middleweight title won by local man Yuzo Kiyota, 15-2-1 (13), who forced a seventh round referee technical decision over Zulfikar Joy Ali, 26-7-6 (22), of Fiji, who last November had unsuccessfully tried for the same belt against world rated light heavyweight Crazy Kim.

Ex-Japanese Bantamweight titlist Masayuki Mitani, 22-3 (10), stepped up to super bantam and struggled with Osaka based battler Satoshi Niwa, 7-10-3 (1), before posting a ten round majority decision.

Into the west, we next hit Trabzon, Turkey on the Black Sea where welterweight Selcuk Aydin, 15-0 (12), outfought tough South African Lucky Lewele, 25-5 (28), over twelve rounds for the vacant title that Lewele once held, the WBC International.

On the undercard, Cuban heavyweight sensation Odlanier Solis, 9-0 (6), continued his climb through the rankings by crushing previously undefeated Georgian Mamuka Jikurashvili, 20-1 (14), in the second. The opposition that 28 year old Solis has faced since turning pro a year ago went into their bouts with the former amateur standout bearing a combined 166-59-3 record, or a composite average of 18-7.

Also making an appearance was middleweight Mahir Oral, 22-1-2 (9), who stopped Joel Sebastian Mayo, 40-13 (25), in the second and heavyweight Yakup Saglam, 13-0 (12), who caused Sergei Babich, 10-2 (8), to stay in his corner after four rounds to win the Interim German International title.

Next up, it’s sunny Spain where at the Polideportivo Municipal at Revilla de Camargo, Daniel “The Cobra” Rasilla, 9-0 (3), stopped Karim El Ouazghari, 5-1-2 (0), in the fourth to make the first defense of the Spanish Lightweight title and Venezuelan tourist Pedro Verdu, 12-8-2 (1), shocked the more experienced Spain based Colombian, Ignacio Mendoza, 23-4-2 (14), by third round KO.

We wind up this week’s Saturday report with a trip to back to the Americas, where heavyweight action at the Graham Arena in Rochester, MN saw big punching prospect Joey Abell, 20-2 (19), get iced by Andrew Greeley, 14-20-2 (8), in the fourth and Raphael Butler, 31-4 (24), stop Otis Tisdale, 25-20-1 (15), also in four.
