Peltz Boxing: Philly Prospect Carr Out To Prove Doubters Wrong

Cruiserweight prospect Simon Carr lashed out at skeptics who claim he won’t show up July 18 to fight Larry Robinson in their all-South Philadelphia showdown at the New Alhambra.

“What’s wrong with people?,” Carr asked. “Do they really think I’m afraid of Larry? This is a big fight in South Philly, just like in the old days. I’ve had some problems in the past but they’re behind me now. Everyone thinks Larry’s too much for me. Well, let them check it out next week.”

The Carr-Robinson fight, scheduled for six rounds, is the chief supporting match on a seven-bout card which will be televised on a 24-hour delay basis by CN8 to more than nine million homes from Maine to Virginia and Washington, DC.

A pair of eight-rounders feature featherweights Teon Kennedy, of North Philadelphia, vs. Thomas “KO” Snow, of Capitol Heights, MD, and light-heavyweights Richard Stewart, of New Castle, DE, vs. Chuck Mussachio, of Wildwood, NJ.

“My fight with Larry is bigger than both of those fights,” Carr said. “We live in the neighborhood and the fight is in our backyard. Look at the guys who came from South Philly, going back to Joey Giardello and Percy Manning and Tyrone Everett and plenty of others.

“Fights between guys from the same neighborhood made Philly boxing what it is; among the best in the country.”

Carr, 31, is 4-1-1 (3), but his ring record is just a small part of his story. He served eight years in prison for the murder of a 13-year-old boy in 1996 after aimlessly firing a gun when he saw man entering the backyard of his South Philadelphia home.

“It’s something I have to deal with every day of my life,” Carr said. “I had to grow and mature and see it from both angles. That could have been me.

“So, now, when people say I’m afraid of Larry Robinson, I have to laugh to myself. After what I’ve been through, Larry Robinson is no big deal.”

Carr has his own website (www.1punchinc.com) and he markets and sells bean pies. Robinson, 32, is 9-3 (7).
