Arena Boxing: Gomez vs. Virchis In WBC Heavyweight Eliminator September 27

ByBoxing Press 20/09/2008

On September 27, Arena Boxing fighter Juan Carlos Gomez and Universum’s Wladimir Virchis face off in their long awaited showdown for a WBC final elimination bout for the right to challenge the winner of Vitali Klitschko vs. Samuel Peter.

One week before the fight, Universum let Arena know that Gomez’ presence at the official press conference “will not be necessary”. The official reason for this is that the clash between Virchis and Gomez has no main event status at the Universum Champion’s Night in Hamburg which means that neither Gomez nor Virchis will be at the press conference.

“This is ridiculous”, states Arena CEO Ahmet Öner. “A fight of that importance – the once-in-a-lifetime-chance to become heavyweight champion of the world and win the famous and honourable Green Belt that had been worn by Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis. How can this be no main event? This shows once more that it is not about sports but only about a personal feud between Klaus-Peter Kohl and Ahmet Öner. Universum simply doesn’t want to accept that we are at eye level with them. To me this just shows how weak they are. It’s a shame and a pity for all boxing fans.”

“Black Panther” Juan Carlos Gomez won’t let these mind games distract himself for fulfilling his great goal to become champion of the world. “I understand that Universum is afraid that I will be their showstopper”, says Gomez. “They might be able to keep me away from their press conference. But on September 27, I will definitely be in that ring and show the world that I am a main event fighter!

“This is my big chance to get a title shot. It might be my last chance as well to earn some big money. I will not blow this chance! I will beat Virchis and become champion of the world. I know that Virchis is a strong opponent. He has lots of power. But I’ve got faster hands and feet. And I can punch as well.

“I am totally focused and very well prepared. I have been working for this chance since early July. I take this very serious and play no games.

I seriously feel that I have never been this well prepared for a fight. My trainer Orlando Cuellar did a great job. Now we want to reap the fruit of our labour.

“I promise to all of my fans that I will show a great fight. I am a black diamond and diamonds are made to shine. I don’t waste a single thought on losing. I am not only fighting against Virchis but also against Universum. When I left them, Klaus-Peter Kohl said to me: ‘You will never fight again in your life!’ Now I say: ‘Thank you, Peter for letting me fight on your show at the Color Line Arena!’

“I am totally focused on September 27. I don’t think about Klitschko or Peter. In the past I would have done that but now I know that kills your concentration. I am ready for Virchis and, of course, I will beat him. What else should I say? It’s showtime! Let the game begin!”
