Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

ByAlejandro Tostado 12/7/2008

The biggest boxing card this weekend was actually on Thursday at the famed Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where three title fights took place.

The South American and WBO Latino Cruiserweight titles were fought over by Victor Emilio Ramirez, 13-1 (11), and Hector Ricardo Sotelo, 18-10-2 (6), with the 24 year old local man Ramirez, aka “El Tyson de Abasto”, stopping crosstown rival and former Argentine Light Heavy Champ Sotelo in the second round.

There was a big unification showdown as well with local legend, WBA Female Super Bantam Marcela Eliana “El Tigresa” Acuna, 31-5 (16), winning her twelfth straight contest to rip the WBC belt away from Cordoba’s Alejandra Marina Oliveras, 12-1-2 (4), in a hard fought ten round unanimous decision.

Yesica Yolanda Bopp, 7-0 (3), continued the Buenos Aires victory parade as she dropped Venezuelan visitor Ana Fernandez, 8-3 (5), in the third enroute to posting a wide points verdict after ten frames to secure the vacant WBA Female Light Flyweight title.

There was also action on Friday in Argentina with South American Light Middle Champ Javier Alberto Mamani, 35-7-1 (19), delighting his hometown fans with a ten round points win in a non-title bout against Cordoba man Valentin Antonio Ochoa, 19-10-1 (8), at General Guemes in Salta.

Also on the bill was San Miguel based prospect Alberto Leopoldo Santillan, 14-1 (3), who outpointed legendary veteran Victor Hugo Paz, 74-47-5 (27), over eight frames at lightweight.

Argentine and WBA Fedelatin Welterweight kingpin Hector David Saldivia, 28-1 (22), of Comodoro Rivadavia won his seventh in a row by finishing off Buenos Aires man Juan Manuel Alaggio, 19-8-1 (6), at Complejo Ingenierio Knudsen in Caleta Olivia.

Also on Friday, at the Gimnasio de la Villa Olympica in Desamparados, Costa Rica, Texas based Mexican welterweight Roberto Garcia, 25-2 (18), pulled off a dramatic tenth and final round stoppage of 42 year old Costa Rican Middleweight titlist Humberto Aranda, 37-16 (22).

The big action on Saturday took place at Palenque de la Feria in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico where local man Manuel Vargas, 25-3-1 (11), took the Interim WBO Minimumweight title from Colombia’s Daniel Reyes, 40-6-1 (30), a former IBF titlist, via a fourth round knockout.

We head back to Argentina to finish this report as Buenos Aires man Santiago Ivan Acosta, 16-1-2 (7), retained his Argentine Super Flyweight crown for the first time with a ten round points win against Rion Hondo’s previously undefeated prospect Carlos Eduardo Bulacio, 10-1 (4), at Club Social y Deportivo San Vincente in Bell Ville. Acosta also holds the South American Flyweight belt.

  • Callum Smith injured 4/7/2026
Callum Smith has pulled out of the David Morrell fight which was due to take place in his hometown Liverpool on 18rh April. I was looking forward to this fight. Callum has a rib injury during training camp. This is a big blow for him as he has not fought since he had that epic victory over Joshua Buatsi. Ben Whittaker will be headlining the event now. talksp […]
  • Errol Spence v Tim Tszyu - June 2026 4/7/2026
The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]

  • Devin Haney vs Rolly Romero collapses 4/3/2026
Negotiations for a WBO and WBA welterweight unification clash between Devin Haney and Rolly Romero have reportedly collapsed. Organisers had planned for the fight to headline a PBC event on May 30, live on Amazon Prime PPV. Haney has turned down the fight. The reason for Haney pulling the plug is that he wasn’t offered a guaranteed purse. PBC instead propose […]
  • Rene Santiago to defend his WBA and WBO junior flyweight belts in Japan 4/2/2026
Rene’s not talked about much. Even here in Puerto Rico he’s not as well known as Xander Zayas or even Oscar Collazo. But he’s got 2 of the 4 belts in the division, and tonight he defends them against Masataka Taniguchi in Japan. Gotta hand it to him. This is his 3rd straight fight in Japan. I admire any fighter who’s willing to go halfway around the world to […]
  • Brad Paul world title shot? 4/1/2026
Brad Paul pulled off an upset Saturday night coming from behind to stop the undefeated Shakiel Thompson. Brad was having major trouble with the tall, slick southpaw and needed a knockout to win. “I knew it was really, really, really close on the scorecards,” he said. "My corner had told me ‘forget about boxing, do what you do best, now it’s time to have […]

  • Bromance between AJ and Usyk 3/31/2026
What is happening between AJ and Usyk? They were seen holding hands as Usyk was showing AJ graves of Ukrainian soldiers. Then they were training together and now he is writing that AJ will become undisputed champion in 2027. Does this mean that Usyk will retire this year and will he relinquish his titles? Is this just mind games to help AJ gain confidence to […]
