Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

ByAlejandro Tostado 15/02/2009

At Club Once Unidos in Mar del Plata, Argentina last night, multiple world title challenger Luis Alberto Lazarte won the South American Light Flyweight title by outpointing San Miguel’s Gustavo Adrian Rodriguez, 14-9 (3), over twelve rounds in the third bout between the pair.

37 year old Mar del Plata man Lazarte, 42-9-1 (17), has held numerous regional belts and challenged for world titles at flyweight, light flyweight and minimumweight.

“El Mosquito” has only been stopped one in his career, by WBC Flyweight Champ Pongasaklek Wonjongkam in 2001, while four losses have been by split or majority decision but a full four losses have been by disqualification.

Also on the bill, 6 foot 6 inch tall Gonzalo Omar Basile, 39-4 (18), had to climb off the canvas in the second to drop and stop chinny banger Daniel Frank, 20-13-1 (20), of Brazil in the third to retain the WBO Latino Heavyweight crown.

Cordoba light middle Fernando Ezequiel Pereyra, 13-1 (2), ran his victory parade to 12 straight with a six round points verdict over Rio Negro’s Carlos Andres Araya, 5-2 (2).

At Expo Forum in Hermosillo, Mexico, Interim WBO Minimumweight Champ Manuel Vargas, 26-3-1 (11), of Lagos de Moreno retained his title with a 12 round decision against WBO Latino beltholder Walter Tello, 11-2 (5), of Panama.

The 27 year old Jalisco man Vargas holds an early stoppage win against the world’s number one flyweight, WBC Champion Edgar Sosa, and could be headling for a clash with full WBO Champ Donnie Nietes of The Philippines should Nietes defeat challenger Eric Ramirez later this month.

There was also a good card in Puerto Colombia on the northern coast of Colombia where Barranquilla’s Likar Ramos, 19-2 (14), knocked out big punching Orlen Padilla, 7-2-1 (7), in the eighth for the WBO Latino Super Feather crown.

On Friday at Casino Pharohs in Managua, Nicaragua, heavy-handed ex-WBA Lightweight Champion Jose Alfaro, 22-4 (20), of Nagarote dropped opponent Carlos Wiston Velasquez, 12-4 (7), in the seventh before finishing him off in the eighth round.

Chontales bantam southpaw Alvaro Perez, 17-1-1 (12), and local man Jose Antonio Elizabeth, 11-3 (5), waged a absolute slugfest that saw both down in the first, Perez canvassed in the fourth and sixth before he roared back to KO Elizabeth in the seventh.

The fireworks continued when Managua based lightweight southpaw Moises Solis, 14-1 (10), belted out Matagalpa campaigner Noel “La Chola” Gomez, 18-24-3 (6), in the second.

On Thursday at Estadio Cr Gaston Guelfi in Montevideo, Uruguay, former WBC Latino Light Middle titlist Rafael Sosa Pintos, 32-3 (12), bounced back from a decision loss to former WBA Super Middle Champ Anthony Mundine in November to outpoint Argentina’s Elvio Matias Figueroa, 6-9-2 (2), in a six rounder at super middle.

It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
