Matchroom Boxing: “Prizefighter” Heads To Scotland For Lightweight Tournament March 24

ByBoxing Press 04/03/200904/03/2009

Prizefighter heads to Scotland for the first time later this month.

Barry Hearn’s all-in-one-evening boxing tournament sees eight British lightweights battle for a £25,000 top prize at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on Tuesday, March 24.

Prizefighter has captured the public’s attention due to the format, which sees four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and a final take place in a frantic three-hour period, with no contest lasting more than three rounds.

This will be the sixth Prizefighter competition and once again the line-up consists of a mix of young, undefeated prospects and experienced veterans.

Four of the eight boxers have never lost a professional contest, while the current Scottish, British Masters, International Masters and Midlands champions are in the field.

Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn said, “Prizefighter seems to go from strength to strength and the last show at York Hall was sensational as former British Champion Tony Oakey delivered the goods and won the light-heavyweight title in front of a packed audience.

“The lightweight competition at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on March 24 looks like being a really cracking event.

“With four undefeated fighters and another four hungry battlers, another all-action night is assured. Once again, I haven’t got a clue who is going to win.

“That’s the attraction of Prizefighter, it’s all on the night and all about no guts, no glory. Scottish fight fans are in for a treat as we hold a Prizefighter night north of the border for the first time.

“If you haven’t seen a Prizefighter show before, make sure you don’t miss this one. It’s totally unique, all-action and with the prize money structure in place, no fighter takes a backward step as they all want that £25,000.

“They say fortune favours the brave and these lightweights have no shortage of courage. So get your tickets early as it’s an evening you won’t want to miss.”

Tickets cost £30 (unreserved) and £50 (reserved, ringside) and are available by calling 0141 810 5700 or 0844 395 4000 (24-hours).

Prizefighter Lightweights will be shown live on Sky Sports from 8pm on Tuesday, March 24.

There are four Scottish and four English fighters among the eight men in the competition. The full list is: Ryan Brawley (Irvine), Stephen Burke (Liverpool), Stuart Green (Glenrothes), Paul Holborn (Sunderland), Charlie King (Motherwell), Gary McArthur (Clydebank), Ben Murphy (Hove, Sussex) and Steve Saville (Walsall).

As usual, two reserves – Gary Reid and Damian Owen – will be on standby if a victorious fighter is unable to compete in the next round due to a cut or injury.

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]
