Frank Maloney – Scott Harrison’s Magnificent Year.

ByCurtis McCormick 02/11/200412/05/2013
With his long experience in the game, top British fight manager Frank Maloney knew that when Scott Harrison lost a world title to Manuel Medina in July of 2003, the Glasgow native was far from being finished from competing in the featherweight division’s upper echelons. Four fights later and the Scotsman has not only regained his crown but now stands at the brink of hotly anticipated career defining title unification matches

with the other kingpins of the featherweight division, IBF and WBA boss Juan Manuel Marquez and WBC belt holder Injin Chi. Please join us at www.frankmaloney.com as we present the one and only Frank Maloney’s views on the exciting comeback of his fighter, Scott Harrison, the WBO featherweight champion.

“In London last month, Scott Harrison was named British fighter of the year, beating out Danny Williams,” noted Maloney. “I know that many people nominated Danny in the independent polls, and even though I manage Scott Harrison, I think that it was a fair result when you consider what Scott had achieved. While Danny’s win over Mike Tyson was thrilling, and it earned him the right to fight Vitali Klitschko for the WBC title, if you analyze what Danny did over the course of the year, I don’t think it was really enough to win the fighter of the year award. Considering the overall picture, I don’t think anyone can argue with Scott Harrison winning that award.”

“After Scott lost his title to five time world champion Manuel Medina, without taking a warm up fight, he went straight back into a rematch and sensationally stopped the Mexican in the eleventh round. That was a year ago and since that time Scott stopped all three of his opponents. First up was tough Colombian southpaw Walter Estrada and Harrison stopped him in the fifth round. Next up was another southpaw, this time dangerous mandatory challenger William Abelyan, whom Scott finished off in style in the third. Since winning the Fighter of the Year award, Scott is coming off the first round destruction of undefeated Samuel Kebede just this past weekend.”

“Later this month, I’ll be taking Scott, along with his father and trainer Peter, to Las Vegas to see the third super fight between Morales and Barrera. I also hope to get Scott back out before Christmas and I’m talking with our promoter Frank Warren about doing just that. I would like to see Harrison fight outside of his native Scotland in order to broaden his appeal to the public. Then in the coming New Year, I’d like to see him in a super fight. A number of the top names are now calling out Harrison, but I believe that the easiest fight to make would be with the WBC titlist Injin Chi.”

“These two fighters, I believe, are a testament to just how good the division is. Harrison and Chi could stand on a dollar coin and fight each other. Neither of these guys will want to take a backward step and neither will want to give an inch. It could turn out to be one of the most brutal fights ever seen in the featherweight division. It would be a great unification match and would obviously put the winner up among the modern day greats. I believe Scott Harrison will win that fight and thereby prove that he is the most dangerous featherweight out there. A victory by Scott would also go a long way to impressing the hard nosed American media.”

“With two title belts, Scott would be the most sought after featherweight in the division. At that point we may be looking at further unification matches or Scott may move up a division to campaign at super feather and pursue the winner of the third Barrera – Morales fight. I believe that Scott Harrison can do anything he sets his mind to, in either of those two weight classes, but only time will tell which direction he takes in his pursuit of greatness.”
