Wardley vs Dubois Preview: Heavyweight Fireworks Expected in Manchester
Heavyweights in Manchester usually means one thing: somebody’s getting hurt. Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois feel like the perfect fit for that tradition. Neither man hangs around, neither man is especially interested in taking a backwards step, and the Co-op Live Arena could end up sounding like an old-school UK fight night by the time this one really gets going.
There’s a proper mix on this card too. Big punchers, domestic scraps, prospects, and a few fights that look much closer on paper than people are giving them credit for.
Main Event
Fabio Wardley (20-0-1) defends the WBO World Heavyweight title against Daniel Dubois (22-3-0) over 12 rounds, and honestly, it’s hard to imagine this turning into some careful chess match.
Wardley has gone from being viewed as a dangerous domestic heavyweight to somebody who now genuinely belongs in the world title conversation. He still fights with that slightly chaotic edge too, which is part of why people enjoy watching him. He doesn’t look textbook all the time, but he finds shots, hurts people, and once he smells weakness he becomes a nightmare.
Dubois is a different type of danger. Bigger pedigree, heavier hands, more experience at top level, and probably the cleaner puncher overall. The question with Dubois has never really been power. It’s what happens when fights become messy, uncomfortable, or mentally draining.
That’s why this matchup is interesting. Wardley thrives in ugly moments. Dubois usually looks best when he’s the one controlling things behind the jab and forcing opponents backwards.
There’s been plenty of talk this week about the fight not lasting long, and it’s hard to disagree. If these two stand in front of each other trading in the middle rounds, someone is likely leaving Manchester flat on their back.
Co-Main / Key Fights
Jack Rafferty (26-0-1) vs Ekow Essuman (22-2-0) could quietly end up being the best actual boxing match on the card.
Rafferty has momentum and confidence on his side, while Essuman still feels like one of those fighters people overlook until they’re stuck in the ring with him. Tough, smart, awkward at times, and rarely easy to look good against. Ten rounds at welterweight between these two feels like guaranteed hard work.
David Morrell (12-1-0) against Zak Chelli (16-3-1) is another fascinating one. Morrell is obviously the bigger name internationally, but Chelli isn’t turning up just to survive. He’s rugged, confident, and usually drags opponents into uncomfortable fights. Morrell probably has too much class overall, though Chelli will likely have moments if he can make it rough.
Liam Cameron (24-7-1) vs Bradley Rea (21-2-0) feels like a proper British light-heavyweight fight. No gimmicks, just two solid fighters trying to move forward. Cameron’s resurgence over the last stretch has been one of the better stories in domestic boxing, while Rea badly needs a statement win.
Undercard
Khaleel Majid (16-0-0) takes on former British title level operator Gavin Gwynne (18-4-2) in a strong test at super lightweight. Gwynne usually gives prospects a reality check if they’re not ready.
Mike Perez (31-3-1) returns against unbeaten cruiserweight Franklin Arinze (10-0-0). Interesting crossroads fight considering Perez still has the experience edge while Arinze brings freshness and momentum.
Olympic standout Bakhodir Jalolov (16-0-0) appears on the card against Agron Smakici (21-3-0). Jalolov still feels like somebody heavyweight boxing is slowly preparing for bigger nights.
Javokhir Ummataliev (1-0-0) faces Damian Drabik (5-2-0) over six rounds at super middleweight.
Fawaz Aborode makes his professional debut against experienced road warrior Garth Noot (3-18-2) at super lightweight.
Bobbi Flood (1-0-0) meets Nathan Darby (3-37-3) over four rounds at super welterweight.
Issiah Hamilton-Allen (1-0-0) also gets a four-round assignment against Connor Goulding (6-10-0).
Closing
Manchester crowds usually help create chaos on nights like this, and Wardley vs Dubois already feels built for it. If the main event turns into the kind of shootout people expect, this could end up being one of the louder UK fight nights of the year.
